My InSinkErator Badger 500 1/2 hp garbage disposal only lasted for 10 month.
I bought this Badger 500 1/2 hp online on September 29 2013 from Homedepot (HD), received it on Oct. 2 2013 and since then had stored it at home as an emergence replacement. When my last one suddenly failed on October 30 2019, I put on this one on October 31 2019. Today, it's Aug 23 2020, I suddenly saw a full bowl of water (in the photo [fig1], I already dumped the water from the bowl but you still can tell water leak from two screws [fig2,fig3]) under the sink and overflowed onto the plastic cloth under the bowl. Fortunately, I always put an open plastic container under the disposal for I am always prepared for the worse situation. So this one only lasted for 10 months. Because I bought it from HD in Oct 2013 but didn't install it until October 31 2019, so I even don't know how to go about claiming that three year warranty. Maybe this one is a lemon one? I put my review here to let people know the quality of Badger 500 1/2 hp. Very disappointed with InSinkErator Badger 500. I still have my original electronic order receipt. The email hidden from the public is my HD account name so you can find all my contact.

Hi, I apologize for your experience with our product. The life of an InSinkErator® Disposer is entirely dependent upon service conditions and usage patterns, just as is expected with other small home appliances. Leak from the disposer can sometimes be caused by improper installation where the water could be leaking from a higher place like the mounting assembly. To determine where exactly the leak is coming from, please refer to this link: https://bit.ly/2FUeIHr. Our quality control team and top-notch engineers are always testing our products to make sure you get the very best quality. If we find a flaw, we fix it and stand behind it. Therefore, we warranty our products for any manufacturing quality issues. Details about our warranty policy can be found in your product's manual or our website here: https://bit.ly/2YwEQPi.

We had the Badger 5 at the home we bought 18 years ago so I don't know its exact age but we bought it again with cord attached.Seems to be good after 2 months use , hard to input on line for warranty registration. Product came faster for delivery than quoted, wish H.D.
would stock this at least one out of 5 stores.

It worked great for 14 months, but noticed a leak and then a hole in the larger, upper section. I'm guessing something punctured it but I only remember one time where a small metal item may have been inside and turned on for seconds upon hearing it.
Also 3/4 HP is a little on the loud side.

Hi Ant, I’m sorry to hear about what happened with your disposer. If there’s a hole in the unit, it's possible that something may have compromised the body of the disposer but, through use, has just manifested. We’re proud of our products and we always ensure you receive the best quality. If we find a flaw, we fix it and stand behind it, that’s why they carry a warranty for all quality issues. Details about our warranty policy can be found in your product's manual or our website: https://bit.ly/2WCnwHm. Easy to Install
My Badger-1 developed a leak at the reset switch. My only option was to replace my current Badger-1. I replaced my current Badger-1 with a new Badger-1. Installation took approximately 15 minutes.

Replaced existing unit that had lasted for 8 years. Had professional install it... easy... left old sink attachment ring in place. I figure about $10/year for 8 years isn't a bad investment.

I replaced 1/2 hp InSinkErator that was 20+ yrs old. Very happy with my upgrade and pleased with the overall quality of this brand. I am moderately handy and installed within 30 minutes. I would recommend to my family and friends. I purchased the corded option because easier for my application.

We had this garbage disposal installed professionally along with our new quartz composite sink and a new faucet.
We bought it with an already attached electric cord which surprised the installer. Saved some time having to attach another cord and therefore saved me money which would have went to the plumbers for more time involved.
I am very pleased with this item as it runs a bit quieter and also seems to be able to handle more food to process.
Overall I am very pleased.

So, I worked as a UA (union) Building Trades Journeyman Plumber building brand, new homes (tract homes) in the Bay Area of California for well over 30 years. ( apartments, condominiums, single-family "Starter-type homes", all the way up to very, large, semi-custom "MacMansion" sized homes) As such, I had the "pleasure" of installing well over a thousand Insinkerator Badger Model garbage disposals. The actual number of units I participated in building is well over 5000. At least that many. Not to toot my own horn (HONK!!). But, seriously, as a professional plumber my analysis of this product would be "very high marks for ease of installation", reliable ( meaning not one of them ever failed to work). No defects of any kind, no "call backs", as part of our contract coverage. Ruggedly durable. Grinds bone, although I don't recommend it. Just a reasonably priced, effective, little machine. High marks all round. Great price, too. Thanks

Easy install, runs great! From disassembly to install of unit took about an hour, without any help. I was able to install this solo, easily. The most difficult part was putting on the tension ring in a small, cramped, dark space, but that's what you want to avoid the disposal separating from the drain mouth of the sink and falling to the floor. Unit fit all the attachments from the old unit so hook up was a sinch. It chews up and spits out (down the drain) with no problem at all.

Let me start by saying my disposal has a power cord that plugs into the wall outlet--I ordered the disposal with the attached power cord option. Our 14 year old Badger 5 garbage disposal suddenly started dripping under the sink about 1 ounce after each use. Like others have written, the leak was coming from the bottom, near the electrical hole and the reset switch. I was glad to see that after 14 years, the same Badger 5 exact model was still being produced. Even though there may be more powerful and quieter models, I preferred the easy replacement of an exact model match that required no drain pipe changes. That allowed me to leave all the existing sink flanges in place, and replacement was a fast 17 minutes (unplug the power cord, unscrew outlet elbow, 1/4 twist the sink flange, wipe out the grime in the p-trap, then screw on the new flange, install the outlet elbow, and plug in the cord). The new disposal is only a day old, so will take time to see if it leaks--but since the original one lasted from 2006-2020, I would be happy if it lasts half that long. We are not heavy disposers; only use the disposal for soft fruit waste, no bones, and no more than 1-2 eggshells a time, running about 20 seconds 4-5 times a week. Noise is no different than the old one.

My old disposal (also a Badger 1) was leaking from somewhere inside the unit. Replaced just the unit with the new Badger 1 and left what was attached to the sink basin alone. That part looks like it would only need replaced if you got a different brand/model of disposal. Or I guess if that part broke or started leaking somehow. After looking at mine seems to me as unlikely.
Took a picture of the old unit before I removed it just in case but is pretty self explanatory where everything goes back. Hardest part was loosening the old unit from the fitting on the sink basin. Ended up having to use 1 screwdriver on each side to get it loose enough to remove.
When replacing the disposal I first had to swap out the power cord and pop out the tab for the dishwasher hose connection but after that was basically like putting in a new light bulb. Once all of the hoses/drain fittings and power cord were re-attached it was all done. This was the first time I've done it so took about 45 minutes but next time would probably only take 15-20. Well worth the time for the amount of money I saved by not hiring it done.
New Badger 1 purrs like a kitten and eliminates food in seconds.
The first Badger 1 lasted 11 years (was hoping would last closer to 20 yrs.) but for under $100 for something you can replace yourself I'm pretty happy overall. 100% recommend.
