About This Product

The best time for dethatching is right before your lawn's most vigorous growth cycle-late spring from warm-season grasses and early fall for cool-season grasses. Not sure if you need to dethatch? The best way to test your lawn is to use a hand spade to remove a 2-3 inch thick plug from your lawn. If you see more than ½ inch of spongy, brown material between the blades and the topsoil, it's time to dethatch! Brinly's 48" Tow-Behind Dethatcher was designed for dethatching large lawns efficiently. Two rows of flexible tine tips comb the lawn, extracting thatch and depositing it on the surface where it can be mulched by the mower blades or removed using a sweeper or lawn vacuum. The drawbar's adjustable mounting positions adapt to accommodate all tractor hitch heights. Unique to the DT-48BH is an inline wheel design, which levels the tray so that it follows the contours of the lawn without adding to the overall width of the attachment.

Highlights

  • Maximum Thatch Removal: For larger mowers and lawns, a 48" working width and 2 rows of 12 independently flexing spring steel tines comb through a lawn, lifting thatch up and out of the lawn where it can be mowed or mulched to promote a healthier root system.
  • Ideal for Large Yards: Wide 48" working width is perfect for larger mowers or bigger greenspaces - covering more ground for quicker results.
  • Long-Lasting Construction: All steel construction, tines are made of durable spring steel; in the unlikely event of a breakage, a safety rod is included to catch the tine and prevent contact with mower blades. No flat rubber-tread transport wheels for durability.
  • Transport Wheels: 8" never-flat transport wheels are located behind and in-line with the tray to minimize footprint width and facilitate leveling.
  • Spring Steel Tines: 24 long-lasting, triple-coil strength 3/16″ diameter spring steel tines stay flexible and guarantee performance.
  • Universal Hook-Up: A single, heavy-duty universal hitch pin is included to easily attach the Dethatcher to any rider or tractor and most any ZTR or ATV.
  • Simple assembly: includes easy pictorial assembly manual, assembly video also available on brinly's youtube channel
  • Made in the USA: trusted Since 1839, brinly-hardy company has been dedicated to providing quality, durable, and innovative lawn and products built in the USA

Q:Does this take little sticks well?

Answer This Question

A:  Tai000, Thank you for your inquiry. The DT-480BH is a dethatcher that is used to pull dead grass (thatch) up from the ground. It sounds as if you are wanting to uses this kind of as a rake? If that is the case, this will not work in that manner, and I do not believe this would meet your expectation to work that way. If you have any questions, please reach out to customer service at 877.728.8224

Q:Will this pull up and damage Zoysia runner roots from spreading

A:  I think it would since you can set the depth. I also use cinder block weights when I need it to go deep.

      by|Sep 3, 2022

A:  Hello Vince, and thanks for the question. Yes, you can thatch Zoysia but with some caution. You will want to set the DT-480BH dethatcher to where it is just grabbing the thatch. You do not want it to get down to the point of scarifying. One area of concern is if you are in an area of early frost or cooler temperatures, the recovery time may take longer. So timing will need to be a consideration. If you have any questions, please reach out to customer service at 877.728.8224. I hope this helped.

A:  If you're using it in thin areas maybe. On healthy bermuda it will fluff it a bit in growing season. A mow and a drink and it's normal in a week. Mostly I use it when bermuda is dormant after I scalp and bag, then apply early spring pre-emergent. Don't try to dig too deep and two concrete blocks are more than enough weight.

A:  Hello ROC123 and thank you for the question. The DT-48BH will not be that difficult to assemble. I have attached the link to a video for assembly. https://brinly.com/product/dt-48bh_48-in-tow-behind-dethatcher/

A:  It's not difficult at all. Easily follow directions. Use 2 cinder blocks for weight on back while using.

A:  Assembly instructions are not the best, but it's not rocket science. Dethatcher works well on a dormant, short lawn. 2 cement blocks are too heavy, I used just one. It gets right down to the dirt. You'll have to pick up the mess after.

                    Checks the box !
Was looking for a tool like this to help promote the lawn growth and the product seemed like a good fit. Having 2.5 acres of lawn I wanted the 48 in to make a dent in the task. Assembly was pretty easy until i ran into a problem in which the box contained two left had end plate, but a call to customer service and BAM that guy got the correct piece sent out in like 2 days!! Really appreciate the fast response. Finished assembly and went to work. It’s a beast, and setting the depth at the recommended depth was pretty spot on. In short…. Got the entire yard done, the spread out a bunch of grass seed and a nice rain followed that evening. PERFECT ! Pulling it with a 52in Gravley ZTR. Buy it ! You should be happy. Think I created a monster because my wife really enjoyed the process and she kept me busy emptying the junk it pulled up..

                    Works great and great value
I recently purchased this for use with my Gravely ZT HD mower. Assembly was fairly straightforward (I ended up being short 1 washer) and the instructions for adjusting the height worked perfectly. I dethatched my yard and it worked quite well. Other reviewers suggested doing two passes in different directions and I found this worked well. Overall I am very pleased.

                    The best thatcher ever!
I bought this to dethatch my 2+ acres of grass, which has never been dethatched before. Two dethatching runs, each followed by a lawn sweeper collected the attached volume of thatch (see attached picture). A pleasure to assemble and use!

Used on an acre, it worked perfectly!
I recently bought a home on an acre, and bought this after seeing all the reviews. Assembly was super easy. No cinder blocks, hooked right up to my Cub Cadet ZT no prob! Used this for several hours on a Friday night and the results were great. Ripped tons of thatch out, left lawn intact. Perfect combo.

A great dethatcher for the price.
I received the dethatcher ahead of schedule and well packed. Prior to assembling, I painted all the parts to match my John Deere green tractor. A slight sanding and a can of spray paint and my wife didn't believe that it didn't come from the factory that way. Assembly was easy and took about a half hour. I did the 10,000 square foot lawn, 2 passes in about 1-1/2 hours. To clean up the thatch left by the process, I mowed in a circle leaving a windrow in the center, that I put in a trash can and dumped in the woods. The rope in the photo I attached to the 3 point hitch on my tractor so I could lift it to make backing up easier. I think this was a great price/value purchase.

                      perfect for raking gravel driveway
I use this for raking and smoothing the gravel in my driveway instead of a dethatch rake in which it was intended. When finished my driveway is smoothe and level and looks freshly hand raked. I think Brinley is missing the boat by not mentioning this feature.

Once I dialed in the proper height settings and added two small cinder blocks for added weight, it worked like a charm. I picked up a small mountain of thatch, moss and dead grass with this. Highly recommend.
