Will fit a 7'6" ceiling with modifications
I thought I would write this review for anyone with a short ceiling like mine. I have a 7 foot 6 inch ceiling which is lower than their minimum indicated. Of course I can't recommend anyone else do this since it does not meet their required height. Do at your own risk. Anyway, to make it fit 7'6" I had to cut off ALL the stairs on the last hinged section and attach the extension legs just below the last hinge. See my pictures. I put the red warning stickers on the legs of the ladder to remind people to flip down the last portion because it's so short I didn't want someone to go up the ladder without doing that first, and possibly hurting themselves or the ladder. With the extensions down it's very sturdy, with not wiggle at all. Positives: 1. The pistons are much nicer than my old springs. Hopefully they will last or can be replaced if they die. 2. The pull cord handle is easier to grab than just a rope. But it does look cheap, clear plastic. 3. The ladder is very sturdy when down. Better than my old wooden ladder. 4. The weather stripping went in with some effort, which hopefully means it will stay for a long time. See picture. I think it will help too. 5. I followed the directions and it worked well as written, no adjustments other than the way I changed the cutting of the stairs. 6. The aluminum is fairly thin so it's easy to cut with a hack saw (could be a minus, but it appears to be very sturdy) 7. The places to put the lag bolts are predrilled through the wood. Which is a nice touch. And lag bolts are supplied. Negatives: 1. The 4 stairs at the top, with the insulation behind them, means that you only can put the front of each foot on the stair. On my old ladder you could put your foot further in because there was no insulation to block it. 2. When flipping the middle section down to go up the ladder there is a lot of sway side to side until the ladder has been put on the floor. It feels like I could twist it and break it if I wanted to. My wooden one was much sturdier that way. 3. EVERYTHING on this ladder is riveted. I hate rivets. My old ladder had mostly nuts and bolts. 4. Not sure the insulation will help much since it doesn't cover the full surface of the opening. I highly recommend an insulated Attic Stairway Cover like the 'Duck Brand Attic Stairway Cover' or similar. I have the Duck Brand one which has a fabric skirt on the bottom which seals uneven surfaces very well. Neutrals: 1. The part you see from underneath is fiberboard, my old ladder was a thin sheet of plywood that I stained. This can only be painted. Overall I would recommended this one, unless there is another one out there that is bolted together, then I would buy that one instead. Hope this review helps.

We installed this to create more convenient attic access for our 1960 hip roof home which previously only had a small access in the master closet. Our home has a double ceiling, so the install was a little more complicated but it worked great for our use. We installed a hardwood panel over the unit, painted and trimmed out then added a handle for a more finished look since this is in the main hallway of our home. Works great!

    Flimsy Junk
For a $250 ladder, this thing is cheap. The sheeting for the door is 1/8-3/16 thick plywood. A corner of it broke during the install. The springs are so powerful that it will break the plywood if you hold it while letting the door up. Will have to upgrade this asap... anothe $50 and hour of work. When installed on a presumably level ceiling, the door opens a little too much, so the steps slope down (not level). Hopefully this doesn’t cause a slip and fall down the road. See picture. Overall... completely not worth the price. Worth about $100 at best if you can get it on clearance.

The "new" version is a nice upgrade. It has 1" foam insulation between the ladder and door panel. Easy to install if you're comfortable with framing and using 3 1/2" screws. You'll also need some shims.

      Watch the installation video first!!!
This is a nice pull down ladder. PROS: Delivered straight to the house quickly. Fairly easy to install with TWO people if you do your prep work. Insulated panel Fit tall ceiling in my garage (10'-1") Written instructions were decent. Can install in a few hours. CONS: Install video doesn't match written instructions 100% (written instructions are more clear) Tread depth at top of stairs is a little precarious as other reviewers said. The exposed panel (the panel you look at when it's closed) is made of inexpensive pressed board so attaching something to make it look good or blend in with your ceiling is a little bit of a pain. Overall its a good ladder that I would recommend.

Easy to install. I was able to do it by myself and I'm not a big or strong person. This was adding additional access so once the site was prepped I pushed the ladder into the attic, attached the supports and then slid the ladder into place. Placing the long support screws at the hinge side wasn't the only problem. Not a lot of room there and I had trouble predrilling the full extent of the screw. This contributed to breaking of the screw heads off. This was fixable by drilling through the broken screw shaft and placing a new lag screw but not everyone will have hardened titanium bits to do this. Easy to open and feels safe to use.

The aluminum ladder is of good construction and feels sturdy but the wooden frame appears substandard and doesn't seem very strong. However, as long as the frame is anchored well and mounted/shimmed square into the overhead rafter beams, it becomes very sturdy and then there won't be any issue. Recommend drilling holes in the wooden frame for the nails or bolts that are used to secure it in place so the wood does not split. Good product overall.

Product is sturdy and works well. If you follow the instructions, getting the ladder adjusted to the correct height in the opening is difficult and the person on the bottom needs to be very strong. I suggest using the technique in the Werner installation. I would have bought the Werner, but they do not offer a model over 10' for 24" framing. They do not supply the recommended fasteners for final installation (1/4 x 3 lag screws). The packaging was weak and the box was damaged in shipping, but the ladder was OK. Parts tumbled out when I opened the box. After installation I was pleasantly surprised how strong and stable the ladder is. It is now comfortable to climb the 10' into the attic. The hand rails are an upgrade from previous attic ladders that I have used. The installation was a challenge for a competent DIY guy. If you are not experienced at installation, get a professional.

My issue is with Home Depot Customer Service, not necessarily the ladder itself. The ladder is good and works as described. I bought the ladder online for ship to store and pick-up. I had my General Contractor pick it up, which was very convenient. When he unpackaged it, it was damaged. He suggested I let him install it, because it was going to cost me to have to pay him to return it and come back with another one (whenever it was delivered to the store again). I accepted his suggestion, given that it would have cost me more money and I wasn't sure when it would come in and then when he could come back again to install it. I contacted Home Depot and provided photos of the damaged item. I did not expect them to refund me all my money, but I expected that I'd get some consideration. My initial response from Home Depot was to return it. Apparently, they failed to even read my e-mail, because I told them it was installed and gave them photos of the installed item. Then they told me I have to contact the online department and that they "may have a resolution for that". I figured enough time wasted. In all fairness, the online review process is skewed because the ladder is OK. If I was rating the service I received, I would have on left 1 star.

This is the 2nd time we ordered this ladder. Previously ordered and installed for our high ceiling in garage. Have used occasionally the past three years, a spring broke and we had to replace the whole unit. Was disappointed that it didn’t last long especially since it isn’t used often.

Returned this junk to the Store the same afternoon I got it!
When I opened the box the frame was broken. The (cheap) corner staples came loose, I could have fixed it myself but decided not to because that was not the big problem with this very poor quality product. The ladder was so miss-assembled it would not open. The hand safety railing stopped the latter from unfolding because it was in the wrong location ( it blocked the folding arm from moving). This made in Mexico attic ladder had terrible quality, they must not include any QC inspection at the factory. How this got out of the factory door is a shock to me. I am very disappointed and you may be too. I wasted a lot of time and energy on this Louisville Attic Ladder. However, thanks to Home Depot I got my money back. HORRAY for Home Depot!

          Great for boat house
Installed the 14' version of this about 12 years ago and am getting a replacement since the salt water has rusted the main hinge connecting ladder to door. When builder originally installed ladder, he attached a pulley to lower section with a cord so I can raise and lower it myself easily with the help of a boat hook. Am hoping Louisville Ladder folks can send me a 2' extension piece since the longest attic ladder they make is 12'!

A product that meets the requirements
This ladder should have been installed when our house was built, but the builder told us that he had installed the longest attic ladder available. Our garage ceiling is 11'7" high and the standard ladder is 10'. The only drawback that I can see is there should be a pole, or something that would allow you to put the ladder back up into the ceiling. They do provide a hook to get it down, but it's a trial to get it put back, once down.

            Step Depth
The depth of steps are shallower then the wood one I removed. Especially the upper steps due to the Masonite door face. Didn't realize that till the first time I went to use it. Very dangerous for going into attic. Wouldn't have bought it if I knew that.

Have had to order now 3x…continues to arrive damaged in shipping. I believe the opportunity to be in the overboxing of the product, not the product itself, but nonetheless frustrating to have to order multiple times
