I am like a lot of guys - love my tools but need a justification to get new tools. I had a couple pieces of white oak that were left over from a mantle I had made years ago. They had been laying around and were in pretty rough shape and I was about to toss them when my wife came up with a project. Perfect opportunity to test out the DeWalt thickness planer. I ended up getting the whole package - planer, spare blades, stand and in/out feed tables. Have to say this planer worked like a star! Even with the rough shape of the wood I was working with I was able to control snipe fairly well. Working with the white oak, I only took light passes 1/16 or less and kept the planer running at finishing speed. There is a speed for dimensioning but the slower feed rate was plenty fast enough for what I needed to do. It was easy to set up and operate and now that I have it will find a lot of uses for it. Plus rough cut hardwood is a heck of a lot cheaper than sanded 4 sides. I have a bunch of curly maple I am itching to run through it. The only thing I wish it used a generic planer blade vs DeWalt blades. Hopefully the DeWalt's last a while because they are not cheap.

Excellent value and great quality
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I spent about a month doing research on a planer. While researching it cane down to price and features. And while this was significantly more expensive than other brands and even the other dewalt planer it was worth the investment. With that said, the planer was pretty much ready to go out of the box. The only thing I needed to do was attach the outfeed extenstion tables and make sure they’re leveled with the planer. The quick dial presets make it easy to preset a desire thickness for your piece. The crank system was a bit stiff but after several uses once the grease lubricated the gears it was smooth and easy to operate the thickness adjustment wheel. Feeding of the work piece is easy, although I did get a little bit of sniping, it’s easy to compensate by feeding the boards at an angle rather than straight. This not only helps with the sniping but helps the planer use the blades evenly. It’s a bit loud and ears, eyes and nose protection should be used. When the piece comes out it is smooth and is almost ready to glue. With two speeds to help you work your piece this is awesome. All I can say is I’m impressed as extremely satisfied with my investment. Wether you’re a craftsman or a serious diy’er this tool is a must have for anyone who is serious about the quality and isn’t willing to compromise with quality results.

Best portable planer on the market
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've owned this planer since 2007 or 2008, and couldn't be happier with its performance. As a home remodeling professional and hobbyist woodworker, this model handles everything I need it to from quickly planing construction lumber to putting a fine finish on hardwood for furniture. Durable, precise, and powerful.

      great product....crappy warranty repair program...
this is a great planer and with sharp blades produces fantastic results. my only issue is the warranty. last weekend one of the sprocket bevels broke off. although a warrantied item they want me to physically bring in a 100lb tool for a 1oz part and said it would take 2 weeks. I ended up buying the sprocket from their warranty center for $5, which was way better than hauling the unit in and it took less than 5 min....

Purchased to replace my dads Ryobi 10" planner from the 1980's, Comparing the 2 is like comparing a Yugo and today's corvette. This planner so out performs the old one. After using my uncle's Dewalt planner i had to have one. Do HIGHLY recommend using dust collection port, don't be lazy for just a couple of passes, this thing can shoot the shavings 15 feet and they cling to everything!

        i wanted to love this
First few small peices came out beautiful. Tried to do a handfull a somewhat larger peices and the planer has let me down. Now when i feed wood it goes in about 3 inches before the piece jumps on the feed tray. After pulling in for another 2-3 inches the piece stalls and sits in place unless i give it a constant push until its inside the machine, then i have to pull the other end until it clear the machine. Its now leaving black marks all over my wood when it stalls out. Im not going to take a brand new machine in for service, trying to decide if i am going to return for a new one or switch brands now.

I have on my 735 for several years now and as a bench top model it works fine! However, it is a bench top model and if you're planning on using it for anything other than hobby type work I would save your money and get a more industrial floor model. That being said I use mine mostly for hobby projects and it does the job. The chip extractor works well, I used mine without any sort of dust collection for years. I would recommend upgrading to a Shelix cutter head as the blades that come default don't seem to last very long. I have a review of this unit on Lumber Jocks if you want more information. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/100027

Just upgraded to the Dewalt from a 30+ year old Makita 10" planner. What a difference. I have only used this planner to thickness some figured cherry boards down to 1/4" after resawing for a mantle and making a pine trim pice from a 2x4. I was very impressed with the surface finish just using the dimensioning setting and then tried the finish setting. Wow! no sanding nessecary here. looking for more items to thickness. I haven't used it long enough to talk about blade life or sharpening. Both pieces had a little snipe, but a lot less then my old Makita. Not too loud and picks up almost all the wood chips when used with a Jet dust collector. I like how thin I can plane the wood. I tend to do a lot of resawing and finish with a drum sander. This may save some time.

              Extremely pleased with results
I had been wanting a thickness planer and spent a great deal of time researching my options. I'm not a professional, so I couldn't justify spending a ridiculous amount of money, but I still wanted a quality machine. That said, I am very pleased with the quality and performance of this planer. I had it out of the box and planing in minutes. I've since used it on a variety of hardwoods (even maxing out its capacity of 13 inches), and have found it produced excellent results, eliminating hours of sanding. I have had some issues with snipe, and while a certain amount is inevitable, it can be reduced with technique. It is well worth the extra money for this package which gives you the extra knives and the tables. It is considered portable, but at 100 lbs this is probably not that practical for most (in terms of using on the job site). I have a very small shop, and can move this planer around relatively easily. I definitely recommend a dust/chip collection system. It is not just a good idea - it really is almost imperative - as this planer creates an enormous amount of chips and shoots them all over your shop without such a system. I really have no complaints - I love this tool!

              Very sharp
We purchased rough cut southern yellow pine boards to use for our bathroom floor. The planer arrived quickly and no issues. It was very easy to put together and worked as described. The floor turned out beautiful and we are very happy with our purchase.

              Good planer
This planer left agreat finish. On hardwoods the bed became sticky with use and needed to be cleaned and waxed to avoid sticking. I love the two speed. I would buy this planer again.

              An Amazing Machine
I purchased the DW735X just a couple days ago. I've planed only a few boards (pine), 'cause that's what I had available. The results were awesome. Much is said about snipe and noise of this unit. I use ear plugs so the noise was not an issue. A family member in room adjacent to my garage said "I knew it was running, but wasn't intrusive". As for snipe ... there wasn't any. My boards came out clean and smooth. This is called a "portable" planer. At almost 100 lbs I don't think that's very portable. Mine is mounted to a rolling table so it is portable in that regard. The in-feed table will fold up fairly flat for storage. The out-feed side will not due to the dust port coming out on that side of the unit. My mounting allows the out-feed table to remain flat and not be in the way when stored. (photo attached) Care must be taken when installing the in-feed and out-feed tables so that they are flat and in plane with the main table. This is a major factor in reducing/eliminating snipe on your boards. I added a Wixey wr510 digital planer readout to my unit to help with EXACT sizing of boards. I would recommend this addition to other users. Some type of dust/chip removal is almost a requirement for this planer. It does throw the chips out of the machine (for some distance) but that requires much clean-up after working. Attach a shop vac or your dust collection system for cleanliness and your own health. I will post an edit after additional use. In the meantime, enjoy your planer.

Checked out the rest bought the best (portable planer)
Have been working on some rough oak for stair treads for a sons christmas present, the finish quality is excellent, being able to set the mechanical stop and not worry about over or under sizing the finished stock is a big deal for a part time wood butcher like me. Finished a pile of high end cherry boards and started on some maple these will be used for two dining tables also for Christmas presents. I am still on the first side of the original blades and the finish is still impressive. The chip removal blower is top shelf stuff and will blow chips the length of my garage if I do not hook up the dust collector. I have had a couple of pieces with some snipe but that was self inflicted majority is snipe free. Although the planer is heavy the handles are large and balance is good so moving is not as difficult as my Delta portable that is about half the weight of the Dewalt. I would love to reccommend this unit to my friends but do not want to tip them off that I have it and avoid the "borrow" conversation for a while longer. This is a high end portable tool producing stationary level quality results.

Meets expectation for value and function
I knew that I was purchasing an entry level planer. Needed a unit that would help me reduce finish time and clean up some minor surface blemishes. Have about 15 hours on the unit and blades are still in good shape. I purchase wood that is semi finished. and don't need to take more than .016" off wood that is between 700 and 1200 on the Janka scale. This unit performs well for my needs. Snipe is minimal, footprint is small and it is portable (100lbs) Remembering that it is about as powerful as a high end Vacuum (15amps) cleaner, it performs very well. For the price I am very pleased with the quality and functionality although the instruction manual is a little clugie. What swayed me to purchase through Home Depot was the price point, no cost shipping and the six months same as cash program.

              So far worth every penny
I have only put maybe 20 bf through since I purchased the planer but so far so good. The pieces come out feeling smooth as glass with minimal to no sniping. Well worth spending the extra money for this model. I even ran a "finished" piece of lumber I bought from the store through to see the difference and was surprised to see how much smoother it came out.

This product has A powerful motor
Hi I always do things myself when it comes to building things at my house. So so when my wife said I could get a new tool, I went for it man! The DW735X with in feed and out feed tables and A extra set of knives was on its way. The shipping was good, and setting it up was easy. When I started working with it I realized how good the planner is there was no snipe and it makes your finishing go much faster and I like that. thanks homedepot!

              Exceeds expectations
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve owned the 735x for 6 months, I run rough sawn hard woods (mostly walnut, oak, and hickory) through it at full capacity (12-13”) most times, it has never skipped a beat, zero issues, flipping blades and replacing blades is easy. Dust/shaving extraction is top notch, definitely worth the money.

The planer is outstanding. Using roller stands, don't see any snipe. DeWalt Customer Service really let me down by letting an active customer service job drop. I resolved it myself, no thanks to them

                Not happy
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It planes great. I would never have bought it if I had known about the roller pressure issue. It pushes down so hard that it scratched the bed. There by meaning hours of sanding to remove the damage. You can not just replace the bed you have to replace the entire bed section. It cost about half the price of the planer. If you choose to buy it just know that the cost of the repair means you could have gotten a much larger planer for about the same price you will end up spending..

I went through two planners in a one year period from HF and decided to buy a known industrial name brand. I'm very happy so far with my purchase. It is much quieter and seems to plan smoother. It literally spits out the chips so be prepared. I purchased the 3 year extended warranty and hopeful it will last. I've only had it for 2 weeks and will update as I use it more, but happy with it so far!
