Q:What is the max distance between stringers that this can span?

Answer This Question
A: Hi Pamela, great question you're asking. A standard rule of thumb is to have stringers spaced no wider than 18 in. apart. So typically, if left at its 48 in. width, two center stringers in addition to the two side stringers would be needed to adequately support these treads. If you have additional questions, we will reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

A: 36 and 48, if you want 40 , cut the 48' s down
by|Mar 11, 2022
A: Hi Margarita, thank you for this question. These treads are not available in 40-inch lengths. However, if your local store has the right equipment, a millwork department associate should be able to cut 48-inch treads down to the length you need. If you have additional questions, we will reply as quickly as we can. Thank you!

Q:Why are these 36" versions more expensive than the 48" versions? That makes no sense. I might as well buy the 48's for less money and then waste a bunch of wood, which is terrible.

Q:How can these be "solid red oak treads" when your description clearly states 1/8 inch layers on the top and bottom?

A: We used these on the small deck and stairs to use at our back door.

A: Hi ColoReno, thanks for the question. The top and bottom layers of these treads are solid red oak, not a paper-thin veneer applied to a composite substrate. The top and bottom layers, since they're solid red oak, can be sanded and finished like real wood because they are real wood. They can be repaired like real wood because they are real wood. The core in the middle of the treads are made of oak and hardwood glued together to form a rigid center that resists warping, twisting, and checking. The word "solid" applies to the top and bottom layers since they are truly solid red oak. I hope that answers your question. If you have additional questions, we will reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

A: The core is definitely NOT solid oak. If it is, it would NOT have 1/8 top and bottom. And please don?t give your definition of solid but tell it what it is.

A: It’s not ply, particle board or MDF so I guess they can claim that. It’s basically layered. It’s a good product though. We had it stained to our liking.

Q:Can you install these steps right on top of existing builders steps rather than remove them? (pressed wood?) They are structurally sound. I took a look at the retread steps, but I have a landing and can't find matching wood thickness.

A: The answer here doesn't make sense. If you install one of these on top of existing treads all the way up the staircase, the riser distance will be the same.
by|Feb 15, 2022
A: Hi RRS4727, we do not recommend installing these treads on top of existing treads. If you do choose to do this, it may require some additional woodworking that would alter the tread and make them ineligible for return if needed. Most building codes restrict any variation of more than 3/8 inch between any riser. If you glued these treads down to your original stair tread, your stair would not meet current building codes. Add to that, just an inch of riser variation presents the potential for a trip-hazard.
