Answer This Question
A: Hi DS28, if your question is asking if these treads will work at a 45-inch width with a center stringer (and supported on each end by stringers), with proper installation and compliant with building code, the answer is yes. These treads are designed to be used in standard residential and commercial applications where a traditional riser is used underneath the nosing. If you have additional questions, we will reply as quickly as possible. Thank you!

Q:Why does it say "intended to be used with risers ?" Is it because of required structural support or is it for cosmetic reasons ?

Answer This Question
A: Hi SamV, thanks for the great question. These treads are intended to be used with risers for structural support. Typically, it's the riser underneath the tread that supports the tread above it. With the modern look of the "open riser" design, or stairs without a physical riser, we have been asked if these treads can be used on an open riser stair. To that question we say no, the tread is too thin to support the average weight of a person without the use of a riser. We recommend solid treads that are a minimum of 2-inches thick for open-riser stairs. I hope that answers your question, but if you have more questions we will reply as quickly as possible. Thank you!

A: It is for cosmetic purposes, if you stain the stair tread you can do a painted or stained riser.

Answer This Question
A: Hi Daniel, thanks for the question. These treads are not designed to be used on floating (open riser) staircase designs. We strongly suggest you consult with an experienced stair builder to determine what is the best open-riser design for your particular home/job site. If you have additional questions, we will reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

A: You would need to use metal bracket supports. It all depends of your design, but this piece is way stronger than pine.

Q:Are these okay for outside deck stair treads when properly treated (stained and UV protected?

A: Hi Neil, thank you for the question. Red oak is not a species of wood that is conducive to exterior use. The grains will absorb moisture and expand during times of high humidity, then contract and crack when humidity is lower. Even when stained and sealed, red oak will eventually corrode when exposed to the elements. We highly recommend using a species like pressure treated pine, redwood, cedar, or similar wood that adapts well to exterior climates. Please consult with the associates in the Lumber Department in your local Home Depot store for their recommendations for exterior treads. Thank you.

A: No that treads are better for indoor only
by|Aug 25, 2022
A: I would recommend you go another route. These treads are red oak which is not great for outdoor applications (unlike white oak). Not sure what sort of "waterproof" finish you could put on them that wouldn't make them slick. Compounding the issue is that a solid slab tread will not drain like a slatted tread.

Q:How much of an unsupported overhang is acceptable with this product? For instance, my stair framing is 2"x8"
Can I extend the new tread on top by an inch and a half or so?

Answer This Question
A: Hi JoeM, thanks for the question. By "tread overhang," are you describing the length of the tread above and how much it extends past the face of the riser underneath? If so, that dimension is regulated by building codes. Typically, building codes limit tread overhangs to a minimum of 3/4 in. to a maximum of 1-1/4 in. We strongly suggest you consult with your local building authorities to learn the code limits in your area. Thank you!
