Q:Can I use skim coat with heated floors?
by|Apr 16, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Yes, you may use Henry 547 as a skim coat with heated floors. Some notes, radiant tubing is within a concrete slab and the concrete is clean, sound, solid and porous (all done mechanically, no chemical prep). Prior to the installation of flooring only, not to be used as a wear surface. For interior applications only.

          Not Self Leveling!
This stuff is great, but let me clear the air on what it is and what its for. IT IS NOT A SELF LEVELER!! which is exactly what I needed my floor slopes from the back of the room towards the floor if I had to use a self leveling concrete I would’ve ended up with a 1 inch step up and about 500 pounds of concrete on my subfloor which is exactly what I did not want. At first I was scared to use this because of the negative reviews but after reading through them I realize a lot of people think that this is self leveling it is not and it is to be used for a very different purpose. Mix it exactly like you are supposed to 3 cups of the mixture to 1 cup of water and mix it with a small drywall mud mixing paddle. When you first start mixing it you’ll be scared and think I didn’t add enough water but you did just keep going and it’ll turn out creamy like peanut butter after about two minutes with a few lumps those are OK. It can be put on top of itself no problem when it’s either not completely cured or dry. So don’t mix up more than you can apply at a time and don’t be afraid to do it in multiple batches. I ended up doing about 10 different batches of concrete out of one 25 pound bag checking for where I needed to make spots higher and where I needed to grind spots and lower with a diamond grinding cup as I went. Now my floor is flat enough that I can set a 4 foot level anywhere I want and not fit a business card underneath it which is flat enough for large format tile. The floor still slopes over the full 8 feet by about 3/4 of an inch but it’s flat and no step up in the doorway. Get a diamond grinding wheel for you angle grinder. It will sand with 40 or 60 grit sandpaper during the first few hours but after an overnight cure you will need an angle grinder and a diamond cup to remove any high spots. Maybe the pros are skilled enough that they don’t need to do this but as a DIYer i did and took my time. So dont be scared by the bad reviews, follow the instructions, and take your time. You will be happy, but may have sore arms.

Since I was working on wood and a thinness of 1/8in and under, I could not use 554 , metal shearing and then 555 .I had to use 646 mixed with 547. It is not self leveling. It worked well, however, I had to work well and hard with it. It was a job since I did an entire floor. It does scrape well with a house scraper to scrape down any height spots.

If mixed according to instructions it is pretty thick but does not dry to fast in 65 degree weather inside. Give it a little more water and it flows pretty good. I had a few hair line cracks and bubbles are a problem but not much. I used this on a bay window seat made of painted OSB to level it out and it stuck good. Poured a couple of thin layers to build up to 1/2' at the deepest to a feather edge.My first time using this and I had read that it got hard fast so I was scared to do much at a time but had no problem with that. Maybe because of the temperature. I did this inside in the winter in the deep south. I also put the product through a mesh first to take crush any lumps. It is better if you have bubbles to just let the product dry and sand over them. I used a sand shark (a metal block rasp) to take down any high spots. Skim coat over the holes if needed. I used 1 1/2 25 lb bags total. If I had filled in the low spots with wall board first maybe one bag would have been enough.I thought it would go further. Over all I liked the product and it did the job. It went on smooth but was so sticky it would drag on your trowel. Be sure you wet any tools to help prevent them sticking.

            Patch and skimcoat
The Universal Patch and Skimcoat was just what we needed to use in the bedroom of the apartment that we decided to change from carpet to vinyl flooring. It will make it nicer for our tenants to keep their floor clean.

            Henry Patch did the job!
The produce mixed and applied well, but I found it hardened a little faster than I expected. I would recommend not mixing more than you can apply in 10 minutes or so. However, the end result was great....the low areas patched nicely and gave me a good level base to lay my cement board.

            Works Great
This stuff worked great to flatten out my osb floor. Had some deep valleys and this stuff filled them up and dried fast. Mixed it in five gallon bucket with my drill and dumped it on the floor. I then used a 2x4 to screed it and level my floor. It had some ridges and bumps in it from incomplete mixing and the screening, but I just let the stuff set up for like 45 minutes and then scraped the high spots with a flat blade trowl. Now it is perfectly smoothe...and FLAT!!! This stuff sets up quick so be ready to rock and roll once it is all mixed up...when your done rinse your bucket with your hose outside while it is still wet....once it is dry it's like concrete.

            Does the job, sets fast...
I really like this product. It works very well if you follow the mixing instructions (1 to 3 ratio water to powder). In fact, I prefer it over the other featherfinish/skimcoating alternatives because it sets fast... You have a ~5-10 min window to use your product, and it dries up within 30-60 min. I recommend use small quantities at a time.
