A:  Maybe... I'm assuming you have this 'style' of garage door seal. However, this style comes in two different Widths (measured when laid out flat) of 2-3/4" by Frost King with 1/4" wide T-shaped ends to fit into the parallel slots on the metal door bottom (this product at Home Depot: Model # RV18 Internet #100658222 Store SKU #562330 Store SO SKU #1000667694) ... OR ... another that that is 3-1/2" wide by ProSeal with 3/8" wide T-shaped ends (Model # 38020 Internet #206849424) ___ To be sure you get the one that will fit, carefully check the dimensions of your existing old bottom seal... [I had to special order the ProSeal item for my 18 ft wide Clopay insulated steel garage door, because the smaller T-ends on the Frost King were too narrow and would not stay in the slots of the metal bottom track.] Installation tips: (1) be sure the metal track is completely clean and free from any dents or distortions; (2) lay the new seal out in the hot sun to take the kinks out of it; (3) avoid stretching the new seal lengthwise, which can happen if it doesn't pull smoothly into the metal track (I'm thinking a slippery solution made with bar soap and water would help reduce friction, if necessary -- but a Second Person will probably be needed to guide the seal into the track, while the First Person pulls it in); (4) if you use the 20 ft ProSeal in an 18 foot garage door, do not cut it to length until it is fully in-place and you're sure that it hasn't been stretched in any way (probably a good idea to Measure it first); I'm thinking there should be exactly 2 feet remaining once it's installed; if it's cut even 1-inch too short it will eventually retract to its Un-stretched length and there will be a gap at one or both ends! (5) Be sure to adjust the downward pressure/position of your garage door (closer) so that it doesn't mash the new bottom seal down completely flat. FINALLY, I would recommend to take a length of 12 to 18" wide metal screen door screen > roll it tightly about 7 to 8 times around a 1/2" dia. dowel rod, cut it, and insert that rolled-up screen into BOTH ends of the new garage door bottom seal, where it will 'expand' back to fit nicely so it won't fall out. The purpose of this metal screen material is to prevent MICE from chewing all-the-way through the vinyl, like they did to my brand new seal the very next day after I installed it. Aaarrgghhh!! If you have mice, Home Depot sells TOM CAT brand "Press-N-Set" traps @ $4 for a package of 2; they work super well... bait with shelled oiler sunflower seed kernels which are irresistible to mice but will not attract ants. Set the traps along the foundation wall of your garage, just to the left and right side of the garage door... and elsewhere if you notice little 1/2 to 3/4 inch holes in an adjacent flower bed, for example. Don't 'waste' the dead mice in the trash (they stink bad after only a day); instead set them out in an area that's open to the sky; the crows or bluejays will make short work of the carcasses.

A:  Yes, but even though I had the same nominal size seal on my garage doors, the tabs that fit into the track were slightly too large so I had to sand them down. I used 80-grit paper on a small sanding block and made about 20 passes each side about 1' of length at a time.

Q:Is vinyl or rubber better for garage door seal?

                        Answer This Question

A:  This was an excellent purchase that helped seal up my garage from the weather. Excellent!!

                        by|May 5, 2023

A:  The 'hollow' half-round style (with T-shaped edges that pull into slots in a metal track on the door bottom) are generally made from Vinyl ... while the nail- or screw-on type -- which are sort of 'C-channel shaped' with two edges that bear against the garage floor are made from EPDM rubber. They're not interchangeable. However, the metal tracks on the bottom of many (typically metal) garage doors have different slots in their tracks for either smaller or larger 'T-shaped' edges, and some even have Round edges on the Vinyl. So, you will want to have a piece of the old bottom seal to compare with any new seals -- to be sure you get an Exact same fit. EPDM rubber seals are attached by using nails or screws and would recommend flat washers also be used to help prevent the seal from being pulled off if it should ever become stuck to the ground in freezing conditions. Recommend reading User Reviews for the various types to find some helpful hints & tips and precautions, (e.g., Vinyl seals come rolled up and, consequently, have some 'kinks' that must be straightened out by laying them in the sun until the entire strip flattens out; Also to reduce friction in the metal tracks, be sure the tracks are clean and one person said they tried a little WD-40 to lubricate the track before trying to pull in the vinyl strip ... I had a thought about using a slippery solution made with Bar soap and water, which should be slippery while wet but will not cause any oily stains on concrete or asphalt below the door or on painted surfaces. FINALLY, whether Vinyl or EPDM rubber, All garage door bottom seals are subject to having holes chewed through them by MICE... (speaking from my own experience). If I ever install another Vinyl bottom seal I will insert some metal Screen mesh into the openings in both ends ... take a 12 to 18 inch wide strip of screen mesh and wrap it around a dowel rod to get seven or eight layers >> which will cause it to expand after insertion into the inside of the door seal. If the mice chew through the vinyl on the outside they will be prevented by the metal screen material from getting all the way through. And, on that note, Home Depot sells these Tom Cat 'Press-N-Set' mousetraps (2 pack for about $4) which are oval shaped hard white plastic with big intersecting teeth on the jaws. >> they are SURE-FIRE the best traps I've ever used, especially when baited with hull-less oiler sunflower seeds, which won't attract ants but mice cannot resist!

A:  I like the vinyl the best, and it is easier to install, less apt to tear during installation.

                              Great fit, easy install
Easy install! I removed the old seal and cleaned the track with a broom. Then I fed the new seal into the track, holding the loose end even with the door in the u-shape described in the directions. I pulled the seal down then had my 8 year old son keep pulling while I fed it in. We got the seal installed in about five minutes.

Tabs are too wide for my tracks
Installed as replacement on two 8' wide older insulated steel garage doors. The tabs that fit into the track were just a bit too wide. To get the bottom to slide into the track, I mounted a piece of 80-grit sandpaper onto a sanding block and sanded about 1/16" off the tabs. It's not hard to do if you also encounter this issue. Just place the strip onto a firm flat surface and sand both sides of the tabs, in approximate 1' sections, vigorously about 20 strokes or so. The photo on the package shows the bottom being installed on the door with the bottom track in place on the door. I found that I had to remove the bottom track (8 screws holding it in on my door) to install the door bottom because the side rail was in the way. I cleaned the track up first and used silicone spray to ease the installation. Be careful not to stretch the bottom too much because it will retract a bit. If you can, install the bottom and leave it on the track until the next day to allow it to shrink to size before cutting it to the length of the track.

Will fit for about 2-3 feet, but becomes too difficult to pull-even with the dish soap. (I ended up tearing one end with pliers because it was so hard to pull!) It needs to be trimmed on the sides, but probably about 1/16" of an inch. Hard to do that to something that 16' long and you have to do it to both sides.

It does fit, but too challenging to slide it across a 17’ door. It is off by some small measure (the grooves of the door vs’ the seal). Used hot soapy water too. Item shredded to pieces on pull side. Returned.
