Store is located in a super convenient location but I find that most of the common items e.g. sand paper for bet sanders and common tools are out of stock. I use the app most of the time so if you come in there with an odd item you will never find it..I bring in pictures "Where is this thing". The lumber selection is very poor most boards are warped or have major defects so cannot be used or you must look them over very carefully before purchasing. The people are very friendly but are not fully trained in all the services I had a small request to install some closet doors and I'm waiting now day 5 to have someone come out and measure. I have called the store with the same answer "I have selected come out to measure in the drop down".. If they don't call I will probably do this myself..

I needed to get a extra house key made the other day, and in the past I would’ve gone to my favorite hardware store Orchard Supply, but sadly, Orchard is no more. RIP Orchard supply. So, It's off to Home Depot. As I enter the store, on my left is where, I think they call it 'Customer Service'... I ask the young lady behind the counter, where can I get a key made and she says aisle 9 (service point of failure number one). I go to aisle 9, and I find the key machine about halfway down the aisle. Immediately, it’s not obvious if it’s a do it yourself key machine, that I make the key myself or do I need some assistance from a sales clerk. I look around the aisle, and naturally, in Home Depot there’s nobody in my sight that can help me (service point of failure number two). While I am sorting that out, there’s a real cool video display on the key machine talking about a service, if you lock yourself out, you can store a digital copy of your key on your cell phone. How cool is that? That’s something I could really go for. Can you guess my first thought or question about it? My first question, was how much does this cost? Or is it free? Anyway, it was not obvious if there was a cost or if it was free (service point of failure number 3). Now, I start looking around for a sales clerk and I have to go all the way to the front of the store and there are two young women in Home Depot outfits, bright orange shirts socializing with each other. I asked them if the key machine is do it yourself or do I need assistance? They cheerfully say that I need assistance and they will send somebody to aisle 9. Why didn’t I get that, when I asked where I can get a key made as I walked into the store in the first place (remember, service point of failure number one)? Just another day in Home Depot… I go back to the key machine and wait for the clerk to show up. A minute or two later, I see a guy in his late 50s early 60s in Home Depot outfit walking up the aisle toward me. I ask him how are you doing? And in his best I really don’t want to be here attitude, he replies, "Fair to middling." BTW, here's the definition of the phrase from the internet" "Fair to middling describes something that is average or only slightly above average. The term is an American phrase, used as early as the 1820s. The term fair to middling originally referred to gradations of quality in cotton, sheep and other farm goods. Such goods may be designated into categories such as fine, good, fair, middling and poor. By the 1860s the phrase fair to middling evolved into common speech to mean something average or slightly above average." That sounds about right, I'm dealing with someone average or slightly above average. I ask him about this idea of keeping a digital copy on my phone. It’s called KeyHero, and by the way that’s a great name. And I ask him, "Is it free or do I have to pay for that service?" (service point of failure number 3) He says it’s free! I ask him how do I take advantage of that offer (service point of failure number 4). He says, you need to download their app and oh by the way you can’t do it in the store because there’s too much metal that interferes with downloading stuff. I go to the App Store type in 'KeyHero' start to do the the download and by the time he is finished cutting my key I have the app on my phone. It’s too late to get the digital copy as Mr. Fair to Middling, quickly puts the my new key in a bag, hands it off to me and scurries away on another "service call" in Home Depot. So, nowhere in this store does it clearly state that 'KeyHero' is free and if I want it the steps are needed in order to take advantage of this important offer. Oh, now I see a sign at about the 9 foot level above the key machine, that talks about 'KeyHero' and in small print is the word FREE (service point of failure number 5). FREE is one of the most powerful words in selling. KeyHero, I can guarantee to double, triple and maybe quadruple your sales... put this phrase prominently on & around the key machine, "KeyHero is FREE!" Next, make it obvious what steps you need to take as a customer to get this amazing free offer. The advantage to them is, when I get their app, they’re going to have my details and they’re going to be able to communicate with me and be able to provide relevant valuable offers and tips.… Opportunity lost. Home Depot on the other hand has a bigger problem. For me, I think it’s a cultural problem they don’t have an attitude of service or connecting the dots in terms of providing a better customer experience in their stores. But if they did choose to improve the customer experience, when I walk in the store and ask about getting a key made, the 'Customer Service' clerk could’ve asked me, "Do you want me to have someone meet you there and make a key for you?" But I guess that makes too much sense. In addition, Home Depot could make it obvious that this is not a self-service key machine in the middle of aisle 9 with a simple suggestion, "Need a key made, Ask for assistance." Now, I head to 'check out'. Thankfully, it's a short line & Peter, the cashier checks me out. Peter notices that I'm paying with a gift card & that I keep my remaining balance written on the card in permanent ink and asks, "Would you like for me to write your new remaining balance on your card?" I'm stunned (a thinking person, providing REAL service while wearing an orange apron... I recover and say, "Yes, please!" (Finally a win) Home Depot, please give Peter a raise, a bonus or both! I'm home now, and I pull the key out of the bag... the bag happens to have complete instructions on how to access the 'KeyHero' offer... including the part where you can give the sales clerk your email address or cell phone number AFTER my key has been scanned and then download the app later to complete the process (service point of failure number ???, I've lost track). Hummm, I guess Mr. Fair to Middling needs some training. Nah, not gunna happen. Just post this sign prominently for the customers: "KeyHero is FREE!" "AFTER your key has been scanned, provide the sales clerk your email address or cell phone number, then download the KeyHero app later to complete the process." Back to my key and the moment of truth... I try it & it works, a little sticky, but it works (win #2). After all this, I'm looking at my receipt and I notice the Home Depot logo and their slogan at the top, "More saving. More doing." I guess that after all these years of Home Depot shopping, that the "More doing" is pre-purchase not post. BTW, anyone have a positive HD story? That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
