The auger is easy to use

The auger was easy to assemble and start. The problem is our ground is rocky and hard and this machine couldn’t handle it at all.

I have approximately fifty poles to put in the ground. In the past I've always used post hole diggers but decided to invest in this auger. This did the work for me and in a tenth the time. Great product !!

This auger works fine in non-clay soil types. Where I live, I have a lot of clay mixed with stone. The auger bogs down often & the hole must be cleaned out & a digging iron used to loosen the soil for the auger to continue. Using the auger is still better than digging the entire hole by hand.

Lightweight and easy to use,but even the smallest rock stops the auger, requires you to stop and remove the rock to continue. Returned to store and rented a tow behind that was much better suited for the job I was doing.

It runs good, starts easy, but it leaks gas from the rubber grommet that the fuel lines run through. I had to risk it and use it because I was on a very tight deadline. Partly because the shipping was messed up and they tried to deliver to a wrong address.

Great product....aggressive tool with power to spare. You still need to scoop out the soil, but it certainly beats the manual way of digging. Great investment for the price.

Bought this a year ago to do 2 miles of barbed wire fencing...2-4 feet deep in hard Colorado clay. I have to soak the holes with water, but this eventually gets the job done. My neighbor's 70 hp tractor auger even struggles in the clay. I have about 150 hours on it so far and the only maintenance I've done is change the spark plug once. I've said to friends I've already got my money's worth and I would buy another one today if it broke! Still going strong though...about half way done with holes.

Bought to put up some fence behind my barn where I couldn't fit my tractor digger. This machine was so weak it couldn't boar in mowed grass. It would stop in soft wet dirt I didn't even hit any roots or stones and it was frustrating. I cleaned this up and returned to Home Depot. It is a weed eater motor with a big auger attached to it. No power and beats you up. Buy a hand digger or rent a bobcat. Don't waste your money

Definitely better that post hole diggers. Still need them to clean out the hole but definitely a big help on a big job.

Am very satisfied with the auger, makes post installation and planting bushes easy. When my tiller was down for repairs, used the auger for a line of holes that turned my garden area. Starts easy.

I installed 60 4x4s for a fence. The auger worked great. I live in an area where soil is sandy. Great tool for the price.

I purchased the auger for my new fencing business. I have only used it a hand full of times. I'm located in middle TN and there is a lot of rock. This auger works as well as expected, It spins relatively fast so be careful. It will move small rocks up but bigger rocks can hurt you.

Easy to assemble. Fired right up. Should have bought extra OIL for the tank. A bit extension would be nice. Can be operated by one person but two make it easier. Handle grip actuator is convenient and easy to use.

Easy to assemble. We have used this auger and set 14 post in 4 hours. I recommend using synthetic fuel.

The auger works well. At first it would not start. Took it back to Home Depot in Flemington NJ. The men in the tool rental department looked at it, and finally realized that Southland had placed the decal on backwards so that Cold Start and Run Warm were reversed. Thanks to the men in Tool Rental!

Easy to use, doesn't take a lot of muscle. Expected it to slam into me if it hit something immobile but not the case.

My rating is purely based on my needs. Sure, the auger doesn't really have the power to easily cut through hard soil. It doesn't seem to pull the soil to the surface as nicely as commercial models either, so I found myself having to hand dig a little to clear the hole. Yes, it did bog down during the process of digging, while cutting through clay soil, but it was a WHOLE LOT EASIER than digging it by hand with a post hole digger!! You can also buy different size auger bits for various jobs, so I've used this for digging holes for trees and even for starting square trenches. For the cost, it's not a bad machine. It starts up fairly easily and the weight is reasonable and managable for a single person. Overall, if you are going to be using this for commercial application or plan to do a lot of fences or tree holes, buy a commercial model. But if you are a homeowner just looking to make the occasional job around the yard a little easier, this machine will do the job.

One star for the experience, This auger was defective out of the box. The engine started easily but when applying throttle the bit wouldn't turn and engine stalled. This condition is actually listed in the troubleshooting section of the manual. I contacted the support number in the manual. First attempt was outside the specified hours in a different time zone, second time I got through after a short wait. I explained what happened to the agent who hehawed some then indicated that there's likely something not engaging in the gear box. I would have to take it to a service center for repair. This product is sold by Home Depot online only and my project awaited so I returned it at local store no problem. Home Depot stocks the Powermate which is the exact same auger as this with a yellow paint job. Instead I went to Lowe's bought the Y43Z. I found the website of the China manufacturer. Sold in bulk and dressed in any handle variation with reseller branding for about $150.

This is a good tool for a homeowner. Commercially I think it may be a bit under powered. This does well in softer, sandy soils. It does ok in clay.

Not quite enough power to drill fence post holes complete.Keeps bogging down even in soft soil. Will start hole but you will have to dig with the old 2 hand diggers to reach a 3 foot depth.

Worked for 5 min, bad equipment, run from it. Bad customer service.

works great does what its supose to do. not an echo or stihl but for the price its great

Easy to use. Fires right up. Works great in red clay here in the foothills of the Appalachian of Georgia.
