The old latches on a couple of my windows were no longer catching properly. Although I had to drill new holes that were offset from the original ones by about a quarter inch, the latch still covered the old screw holes. The quality is far superior to the original latches on the contractor grade windows that were installed at the time the house was built 11 years ago. The complaint from another reviewer that these would not stop a burglar is misleading. The screws would pull out of the window sash before the latch would fail. That is more a result of the window sash failing to hold the screws, not the screws or the latch failing. Unreinforced vinyl or wood sashes are not for high security.

This was best latch to replace my old latches that where failing to keep my windows shut. Here´s the trick to installing without cracking wood: 1. predrill holes with 3/32" drill. 2. position the larger piece of the latch away from you so it overlaps the back window slightly. The back window doesn´t go up so it won´t hit the latch. Now you can position the back (thin) latch back a bit away from the edge so there is less chance to split wood. You can push and hold the thin catch against the larger piece as you mark the holes. The design makes it very easy to get a perfect alignment.
I´ve installed 2 of these where I had the biggest problem of windows opening up. Going to get enough to do all the windows now.

Worst design ever
I don't know who wrote the positive reviews but I can't imagine it is anyone who ever tried installing these sash locks. They are designed such that the piece mounted on upper sash must be mounted flush with the face of the sash, and therefore the screws driven into the sash less than 1/16" from the edge of the sash! Guess what happens? If you manage to get the screws in without splitting the wood, all it would take would be a slight pressure to break the sash lock free from the sash - and your burglar is in the house.

good value for the money
Latch is much better built than the 60+ year old latches that were in the window before. These were very easy to install and are very secure.

Perfect Fit - Milgard type
I looked for weeks and weeks for a lock to replace a broken one found in my recently purchased home. Even the Milgard dealer did not have one that fit, as windows are older models.
This one was the magic fit!

Good replacement latch
After searching the net, I could only find 2 vendors that sell this kind of replacement latch. The other site wanted to charge $15 in shipping so I went with Home Depot. This is a good latch. Giving 4 stars instead of 5 because two of the screws strip very easily. I ended up using two screws from my original latch.
