Howdy folks! As an (unfortunate) owner of an older American Standard toilet with the worst kind of flush valve imaginable, I feel compelled to chime in after reading some of the other reviews here. As so many others have experienced, I noticed that our guest bathroom's toilet was ghost "flushing" every so often. Having replaced flappers on our other toilets with ease, I figured it would be a similarly simple task.
Hold my beer, says the American Standard toilet.
Instead of an easy to replace, functional flapper, I found a bright green monstrosity of a tilting valve actuator. When I inspected the seat disc (the flat rubber portion that actually seals the pipe), I found that it was essentially disintegrating into black slime. I tried to remove the old disc but, of course, it snapped off along with the ball joint at the end of the arm. Now I have to replace the disc and the entire armature.
Thanks, AS.
And considering that I'm working with a toilet manufactured back in 1993, genuine replacement parts are no longer made by AS. Enter, thankfully, this Everbilt replacement.
Installation was a relative breeze. AS toilets have several different types of numbered valves (#4, #5, and #6) but, as far as I can tell, that just refers to the height of the valve. Thus, this Everbilt replacement contains three separate arms. You also get the rest of the mounting hardware but if that stuff is still intact, you can just pop out the old valve (you'll have to flex the plastic on the bracket so be careful) and attach the new valve. If it's like my toilet, it will JUST fit in the bracket so don't be too scared if it feels loose at first. Likewise, don't be alarmed if you still hear some ghost flushing after you first install it. I think the seat disc needs time to mold itself to your toilet since the problem stopped the second day after it was installed.
I should also note that if you ONLY need to replace the seat disc, Fluidmaster makes replacements. If you need this type of Valve, however, Everbilt is your only option.
In other words, this product = good, AS = bad.

Did not work properly. Even though there are three different interchangeable pieces non of the options would allow the flap to seal. Had to return the item and replace the whole drain including removing the toilet tank.

Disc doesn't seal properly, causes toilet to start refilling every 90 seconds or so. I used correct red for my low profile but it's totally unsatisfactory. HD only had the universal which was a total waste of $10.83 not to mention time and cost of trip. It's Saturday so on Monday I'll go to the American Standard distributor and get a quality actuator.

This LOOKS like the OEM part, but it does not PERFORM as an OEM part. The flapper material is not flexible and did not completely seal the tank flush valve. I had to use the flapper from the old assembly. In addition, the flapper assembly is too heavy and closes the flush valve before flushing is complete making it necessary to hold the flush handle down until the toilet empties. Very unsatisfactory.

The included plastic pivot arms made the difference. I've bought these valves before but they always had the wrong arm installed. Now I can change to the correct piece and be done. Only criticism I have is that it fits a little loosely into the bracket on the valve seat. Otherwise its good to go

Unfortunately I bought this complete package, only needing the flapper. The flapper provided was not the screw on American Standard type, which I needed. I did not realize this until I got home and opened the package. The newer design complete assembly was not compatible with the older design assembly, even though they provided the multiple design arms (red, blue, green) The assembly does not fit to the older model base. I would have been required to remove the tank and change the base and tube assembly as well.
As HD does not sell the older American Standard model screw on flapper, I went to AMZN, and quickly found what I needed, arrived in two days and easily replaced. Suggest HD carry the OEM American Standard screw on flapper, if not, save your time and buy only exactly what you need.

This American Standard replacement actuator has got flaws in it. First, to attach the chain to the tank lever arm is virtually impossible and Home Depot 1-800 help line can't explain how to attach. First , they said a piece was missing and then they said its a poor design. Home Depot hot line also said that the seal to the bowl was faulty and there were a lot of complaints... Why would a faulty product be left on sale ??? I returned it.. I believe Everbuilt is a Home Depot private label and the product is built by some vendor. Home Depot needs to do a better job of monitoring this product and "not sell" till it works correctly. Taking the toilet apart and installing a bad product can cost a consumer a lot of time and labor !

Great item- easy swap out with the one that wasn't working
I had an issue with the old valve that was broken and no longer working. I thought I would have to take everything apart, however, this made an easy swap out... turned off the water, popped out that old one and popped in the new one... took like 10 mins to fix something that I had put off days to work on.
