Replaced a cable puller purchased 12 years ago.
Better than more expensive cable puller purchased years ago. Quality of earlier cable puller was about $30 Dollars and was not as quality as currently purchased item.

Worth the purchase
Haven't used it yet, but plan to use it to help with cutting down tree limbs and trees too close to the house. I know it sounds risky but not really when using this winch to assist me. All I need is a long chain or strong rope with an eye.

good tool investment
I needed a come-along to assist in felling some trees around my house; it served that purpose admirably. It is also useful in all the other tasks normally associated with this type of contraption. It is fairly priced, and quite rugged.

very good product!
We were so pleased with this come along ~ my husband bought it from Home Depot to help get the engine out of his truck that he is replacing. He has a tall steal pole that he hooked the come along onto & used it alone to pull the engine out. Then it hung on the come along for 4 days ~ just hanging there in mid air ~ it was awsome!! We would say this for sure did what we needed & wanted & held up super well. It will also be putting the new engine back in the truck when it's ready to go. Thanks Home Depot for a great product!

2ton comealong
the 4 ton version is 4ton only beacause it has a third block or pully.. at its limit it would seem prudent to have a thocker cable. the description does not list cable sizes.

A pretty raggedy tool
Ordered two of the Big Red 4-ton come alongs to help in bringing down some dead trees. Ratchet teeth fit poorly and within an hour needed constant attention to make sure they seated properly in the gear. I worked the things pretty hard, but i don't think pushed them past their 4-ton limit. Nuts started popping off the bolts. Within three hours, one of the winches failed. I picked up a 2-ton model made by Maasdam, not Big Red. Much better fitted and more solidly built. I have more confidence in the 2-ton Maasdam than I do the 4-ton Big Red.

    Exactly what is needed.
Delivers performance when required. Don't buy the lesser versions.

2 ton Torin cable come along
no instructions what so ever regarding operation of this product. Can't even figure out how to release the cable to use it and I have never used this kind of cable jack before. Consider myself pretty mechanical... must be having a brain lapse eh? Pretty much a bummer at the moment and can't find anything helpful here on the net either.

    Sturdy product, uneven quality control
Of the two come-alongs I bought, one has to be physically moved to lock into the pawl, but then works fine. They seem to be sturdy enough. The instructions could have some sort of actual operating instructions. It was easy enough to figure out.

Ok for lift and pulling - difficult to release
Unit is ok for pulling and lifting if 6' is all you need but releasing and pulling the cable back out is a chore. Not well designed, difficult to use. Returning as unusable.

    Lacks instructions
Enclosure w/ product gives safety precautions but no instructions. Having never used a come-along before, I called Torin customer service. He was helpful, but I didn't know there was an "automatic notch-at-a-time let-down release" and therefore didn't ask how to use that feature. (Maybe it'll be obvious when I try it; otherwise I'll have to call again to ask about it.)

    ok for the price
I liked the price and knew I would not be using it every day. If I thought it was going to get regular use I don't think I would advise on this one. It did work fine and unlike other come-alongs I've used this one was very easy to unclick the tension without fear of smashing a finger. I just don't think some of the small release levers will last with continued use. The main negative I have with it was the short cable length ok for cable pulling but if you're using it to wench something like a stump or car then it's a pain to be resetting it every so often. I also think it could be modernized with heavy duty carabiners, not hooks. I am going to recommend this product on the idea of occasional use not for a cowboy using it daily on a ranch.

The units have a manufacturing defect.
I bought 2 of the TR8041 units; neither pawl engaged unless held in by hand. I returned them after talking to the manufacturer (Torin Jacks) and was told they now have a new batch (T32054). Note, the Home Depot site still lists them as TR8041, but the Torin rep said the T32054's are shipped. On the T32054 units (I bought 2 more), only one of the two pawls engages; the other does not engage even if you push on it. The ratchets and pawls are at an angle to each other. So all of the force will be applied to only one side of the mechanism; I will not use them since I expect they would fail very easily.

    4 ton come-along
This comealong is junk. The rachet mechanism didn't work at all. Unusable! Disappointing coming from Home Depot. To their credit, they did a full refund (including shipping) at a local Home Depot store where I found a high quality comealong for the same price, although it's a 2 ton unit.

      4 ton comealong Torin
I just got the 4 ton comealong I ordered on line. The rachet that registers with the teeth was on an angle. Looks like they put the wrong size bolt thru it. I had a job just getting the cable back on the spool. The spring that holds the rachet down was to say the best very poor. It did not work. I would think HD could do alot better for a 4 ton comealong. The 2 ton comealong Maasdam I got 8 years ago from HD was built like a watch compared to this one. Don't wast your time ordering the 4 ton comealong on line

A little more than I needed.
The comealong worked great. It did take a little time to figure out the switch to engage the locking mechanism. The real trouble was the space I was trying to use it in. I inherited a wood storage rack from the previous homeowner. The rack hangs from the ceiling in the garage. The rack is constructed of heavy 2"X6" lumber and is very heavy. I purchased the comealong to assist in the raising and lowering of the rack. The comealong was too long to fit within the 2"x12" ceiling joist. I ended up using pulleys to do the job.
