Thank you for contacting Bemis Manufacturing. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused, however we recommend measuring your toilet bowl prior to purchasing a seat. For length, start your tape measure between the 2 hinges (not all the way back to the tank) and extend all the way to the front outer edge of the bowl. For width, measure the bowl from outer edge to out edge width ways. For further assistance, please call our Consumer Care Center at 1.888.722.6488. Please return your defective seat to the store for an immediate warranty replacement, please place your item in a clear plastic bag. The retail store does not have to keep your used seat in the store or handle it in any way. They will simply view the damage and give you a new warranty seat, sending your defective one home with you.

This seat, when properly installed, should not be disconnecting; here is an installation video to ensure proper installation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC7n1oDuW8M All our products carry a one year manufacturing defect warranty, so if the seat is less than a year old, as you stated, you may certainly bring it back to Home Depot for a full replacement at no cost to you.
