A:  A competent locksmith should be able to cut a key from code. Call them up and ask, find one who will do it reasonably, I would guess no more than $50 if you go, much more if they have to go to you with a service call which has a minimum of $100 or more in many areas. While this may seem like a lot for a few minutes work, I always have to remember that they are giving up time in travel that they could be using to do an industrial job that would pay them more and keep their bills paid. Getting an additional key from them while you are at it should be minimal, otherwise take the new key in to Home Depot and have them cut several copies for you, and give one to a trusted neighbor in an envelope or hide under the spare tire in your car. As to this re-keying kit, it works great. If you don't have the existing key but have another Schlage key, and are very skilled (or deftly lucky), you could pick this lock to get it open into a service mode to re-key, and key it to the new donor key. It takes a lot of patience, and you would need to re-key all of the locks that you want to the new key to go to (I've done this). If you are going to have to pay a LS for a key-from-code anyway, you may consider upgrading your lock to a keypad, and if you make it a Schlage electronic keypad, you can then re-key your other existing locks to match the new key (and never lock yourself out again).

A:  If your knob is a Schlage brand, the key should be inserted into the keyhole (the core) and turned 90-degrees clockwise. This moves the tailpiece of the core out of the way, allowing the release button to be pushed in. The key should stay in that 90-degree position, at which time you take the included poke tool to depress the release button at the base of the knob. I’ve not seen a spring loaded core in a lock before. What brand is it?

A:  Technically, it's made to re-key one lock. In practice, depending on the bit pattern of the new key and the available pins in the kits, you can probably get 2 out of it, or 3 on a stretch, if you have enough of each length pin left. There are (6) of each of the 5 pin lengths, which are color-coded to help facilitate. Since each lock cylinder has 5 pin locations, as long as you don't repeat any color more than twice, you can get 3 locks out of it.

A:  Well, it will depend on your original key. The lock pins will fit into your key cuts. Different keys will use variance amount of lock pins. Don't forget you can also reuse the lock pins from your locks you are repining (rekeying). My guess if you reuse the old pins, minimum 6 and up to 20 if you are really lucky maybe more. However, if you choose not to reuse the old pins, two to three locks from one set.

A:  If they have the master key you cannot rekey and have it work with the original master key. This kit just allows you to rekey all four the Schlage locks to have the same key.

A:  It come with its own key shown in the picture. The old key will not work. If you follow the instructions and the pins color order when you install them it will be pretty easy. It might take a little time for the first one but after that it will be so easy.

I believe within the system key used to rekey the old lock -YES, the master should work, otherwise with wrong system key -NO-the master key may not work on the new rekey lock. Good luck

A:  This would not be a DIY project, it would likely require that you use the building/HOA approved locksmith do your re-key. There are a limited number of possible different keying combinations that will work with the master. I do not think the building/HOA could provide the necessary information about the master to an individual due to security and liability concerns.

A:  I have rekeyed Schlage and Kwikset many times, and I don't remember anything like what you describe. On a Schlage deadbolt, you remove a screw to free the cylinder housing and then use a tool from this kit or a paper clip to hold down a spring-loaded pin. Doing that lets you turn a cap on the end of the cylinder housing so the cylinder may be removed with the follower tool that comes in the kit. Schlage entry locks have a retaining clip that holds the cylinder in the housing. The kits come with a tool designed to help you push the retaining clip off the end of the housing.

Make sure you use the sleeve when taking it out and make sure the notches in the sleeve are not lined up with the pins otherwise they will still pop out. I messed that up on my first one and had to put all of the pins and springs back in.

A:  Not in this kit. You will need a Schlage Service Tool - SCT-1 or its equivalent; however, If you are careful you can depress the pin to rotate the cylinder cap, just be careful when you release the ring that the pin and its spring does not jump out and get lost.

A:  Yes, the lock cylinder is the same, so this kit will work to rekey it. But make sure to watch an instructional video on YouTube before you try it for the first time. The written instructions are hard to follow and if you do it wrong the pins will fall out and break the lock beyond repair.
