A:  Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. Use your own discretion. The pins work in a type C Schlage keyway. Some Schlage padlock cylinders have 6 pins but this kit comes with enough for 5 pins for 6 locks.

A:  It’s hit or miss. I bought them to try on a Schlage with a Baldwin key, but some were slightly too short/not flush. Had to take it to locksmith. You might run into that - I kept it to use on others C types Schlage’s so if you have that kind should work. Good luck

A:  Yes you can do that. Just throw away the keying instructions and new keys for the second kit and just use the pins. I had to do that when re-keying our house.

A:  The answer is a maybe. If you can get 2 kits that have the same code marked on the key you should be fine. If not, all of the keypins are color coded, If there are enough of the same color pins in the second kit you could use those pins and use the instructions from the first kit.

A:  We did this with 7 locks. There were enough pins to do 7 locks, I assume you could do 8 also. I just used the pin map/guide from only the first kit for all the locks, of course. Both kits seemed to have the same sets of pins? I don't know if we just got lucky though and some kits might have different enough configurations that it wouldn't work.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. Yes that is correct to buy a 2nd set. Use just the pins-(not the keys or instructions) from the 2nd set to follow the sequence from the 1st set.

Q:How many different key versions are there for these kits? IE if there at 10 different keys, there is a 1 in 10 chance someone else will have the same key to my lock I just changed. Last I seen, there was 100 different versions but that was in 2014.

A:  I think there are 10 different pin sizes which allow for 100000 keys with 5 pins. You do not have to be concerned with someone having the same key but how easy it is to pick this lock. With a couple of home made tools an no experience it took me 2 minutes

A:  A 5-pin Schlage lock has 100,000 possible key combinations. A 6-pin lock would have 1,000,000 possible combinations. If you are using a pre-cut key, then you are not that worried about security.

A:  If you can remove the cylinder from the deadbolt, you can shim the inner cylinder from behind with a strip of aluminum (i.e. soda can). Then you'd use a bobby pin to line up each pin set at the shear line from the back to the front while keeping pressure on the shim. Watch on youtube how to shim a deadbolt

A:  Yes. You need the existing key to line up the pins along the shear line when you remove the cylinder from its housing to replace the lower pins.

A:  To make all the locks match with this kit, you would need to rekey the new lock and your old ones (up to six locks, I think). Be sure to purchase a new lock with a keyway that matches that of your existing locks -- for example, don't buy a Schlage if your old locks are Kwikset. Another large home improvement chain will rekey a newly purchased lock free to match your existing key.

A:  This particular kit is intended to rekey using keys provided in the kit. To rekey the lock to use your existing key, you must buy a bigger/more complete kit.

A:  Thank you for your inquiry regarding this item from Prime-Line Products. This kit is not a Schlage full rekeying kit. It has only 5 different pin lengths and diameters specially designed for the kit. A Schalge OEM kit will have 9 different pin lengths and master top pins. You can use this kit to rekey all you locks to match the key in the kit.

A:  That means that the tumblers that you remove need to be (sized to the colored one)s your get in the package. Then You can resize all of the locks you are rekeying.

A:  Yes, you need a set of pins for each lock. If you order directly from the manufacturer, you can get additional pins or additional keys for some extra charge. I don't know if you can do that through the Home Depot website. A local locksmith probably will not sell pins separately. Another angle on this is to find a locksmith who can make a "code cut" key -- a key for which the existing pins work, but they are in different positions than they are on your original key. For example, move each key cut forward and then "wrap around" and move the last cut to the first position. Then, with the tools from this kit, you can open the lock and rearrange the existing pins to fit the new key.

A:  This kit will rekey six Schlage locks (either knobs or deadbolts.) If you need to rekey more than six locks, buy more than one kit AND USE THE PIN INSTRUCTIONS FROM ONLY THE FIRST KIT. Explainer: 1.) Each kit comes with a set of pins in five different lengths with each length having a specific color; 2.) All kits come with identical pins; 3.) The key that is used for each kit depends on the order in which the colored pins are inserted into the lock cylinder; 4.) Use the instructions from one kit for any number of locks for which you have sufficient pins and you can rekey an endless number of locks to the same key; 5.) Only the keys included with the instructions for the pin color order you are using will work so throw away all the other keys from the other kits from which you took only the pins.
