Q:Do the grates need to be seasoned like a cast iron skillet?

Answer This Question
A: Beverly, Thank you for the question. Yes, please season the cast iron cooking grates. We recommend vegetable oil, grapeseed oil, or bacon fat. After the grates are coated, you can place them in a 400-degree oven for an hour or on a 400-degree grill for 40 minutes. After time is up, let the grates cool down naturally.

A: The unit is 14 gauge steel with a high heat resistant paint. The unit will arrive with a natural oil coating to prevent the unit from rusting, that will burn off during your seasoning process.

Answer This Question
A: The charcoal sits on top of the fire grate in the ash drawer. You can stack a pyramid on this grate to light the charcoal and then spread it out and place the two cooking grates above it on the ledge in the body.

A: We recommend removing at least one grate to provide access to light the charcoal, but the cooking grate can be put in place while waiting on the unit to heat up.
