Comes sharp, easy to adjust, and priced low enough for an amateur to buy.

As a beginner woodworker I have decided to go the hand tool route instead of power tools and this Stanley Block Hand Plane was my very first purchase. My expectations were met with this hand plane right out of the box. I knew for the money that tuning and sharpening would be necessary. Awesome!

The overall construction of the plane is solid. The fit and finish of the plane is what I would expect for something from Mexico. A solid casting with a well ground flat sole and sides (better than my English made 9 1/2 counterpart) the brass parts are a little rougher and the capscrew was chewed upon assembly. The iron is the weak point on this plane ( which I knew going in on this from the beginning from the reviews). It is much softer then the English counterpart. And in turn will have to be sharpened at least twice as often. But for $35 I don't have to lap a sole.

Works very well, since I received this plane I have re-fit cabinet doors, fit drawer bottoms, and removed finish from a desk top edge. A good addition to my tool inventory. I matched this purchase with a 9" bench plane of the same brand and I am very satisfied.

Good value for the money. Have been using one of these for years. Bought this one for my son. I also have more expensive ones, but this one is reached for most often for general work. A little flattening and blade honing to get really tuned, but nothing unexpected.

Excellent plane and very good!

The basic construction is very good. Some work is needed to set it up. It took me about an hour to file and sand (slowly and very carefully) the parts to an exact fit. I was expecting something like this from the reviews I read. This is a "Stanley" tool NOT a "Lee-Nelson" tool, you get what you pay for. An hours work saved me about $125 dollars.

I would not consider it the greatest but it is sufficient for what I need.

The stamped tab on the blade adjuster is not tall enough for it to contain the blade in position. I ended up welding the tab a bit higher and filed the weld to the correct thickness. Several hours later they all work as they are supposed to now.

Plane is good. The one I received was quite rusty as though it had been sitting on a shelf in a humid environment for a LONG time. Most of it cleaned up but have to say I would not have brought this one home from the store; I would have picked another one or not bought one at all.

Ready to go right out of the package. Very heavy and well made tool. After sharpening the iron and flattening the sole, this tool should rival more expensive block planes!

Before using, I needed to sand the bottom and edges of plane before use. After that step, the plane worked great.

I was not impressed with the finish on this plane, my friend had what I thought was the same plane, so I ordered this one. The finish on all the metal surfaces was very rough. I spent over an hour sanding down the foot of this plane to make it a usable surface. The other cast parts are very rough as well.

The blade is junk. It got nicks from pine end grain. What a joke. After 30 minutes of work on the blade it tooka decent edge, but seems to dull really fast. The body seems pretty solid and it's nice and flat. That's the only redeeming quality.

This plane will not be usable right out of the box like the more expensive sweetheart planes. However, after flattening the sole, sharpening the blade, and doing a little bit of tuning, this plane can do just about all you'd need it to.
