Broken upon arrival
I was excited to receive this product due to the reviews online and I had to wait a few weeks until it was available. When I received the product it appeared to be used because the parts were a little dirty and the box was taped up from top to bottom. I spent about 20 minutes putting it together because I figured if it work I wouldn't mind it being a little dirty. After I put it together and added the gas/oil mixture it started fine but I noticed the bottom of the trimmer wasn't moving. I thought maybe a wire was loose or something so I started looking at the wires around the engine and oil was coming out from a crack in the engine. I returned the product to home depot and purchased an echo trimmer. The echo trimmer has exceeded my expectations.

Had it for 3 years now
I've had this for 2 seasons now and it has beyond impressed me. Both times I've put it away for the season I can pull it out and it will start right up. I have YET to replace the spark plug and I have a large culvert that requires some heavy use. I grew up with a nice $400 Honda 4-stroke and this may not be as perfect but it's about half the weight and 90% of the power (not on the low end though). I also prefer the 2 stroke oil mixing since you don't have to worry about oil changes. Reasonably quiet. Really a great product. Only complaint is the shield is a bit small and the few control surfaces like to rotate and need to be re-tightened.

Very nice trimmer
This review is to rebut jmww's review. I don't know why he struggled to find parts for his weed whacker. All you have to do is look! But that being said, I've owned this weed whacker for almost 3 years now. Recently I noticed I could feel something wet dripping on my leg while I was trimming. I noticed that the return line for the primer bulb had deteriorated and was allowing fuel to leak out. It's not a big thing, but expect this problem as I had read reviews beforehand and this was the only complaint, that the fuel line deteriorates quickly. You will know you have an issue if you prime it and can see fuel leaking out the top of the tank. Other than that, it's always a 1,2 or 3 pull wonder. I've done NO maintenance to this weed whacker for 3 years now, and it STILL starts on the 3rd crank cold (and usually fires solidly on the 2nd) and on the first crank when hot since I've had it. Even if it's super cold outside, its an easy start. It's light and has an amazing amount of power for its size. The guard I find to be inadequate and I have to wear long pants if I'm doing heavy trimming because debris hits my legs and hurts. This is not a toy, kids need to keep their distance. It's not a joke. This thing will sling rocks. It doesn't smoke at all and idles beautifully. Heck I'll crank it, let it idle to warm up while I run inside and get my ear and eye protection (ALWAYS WEAR THESE!! BEING DEAF OR ONE-EYED IS NOT COOL) and its purring like a kitten when I return a minute later with my PPE. I usually wear ear plugs and safety glasses but I occasionally wear a full face shield instead as it offers protection from rocks and junk that seem to always hit me in the cheek. This is a very nice weedeater. I took off the stock head and put a tanaka no brainer load thing. Whatever the heck it's called, it doesn't feed line, you just put a piece in it and use it till its gone. It's lighter than the stock head so it spins faster. The stock did fine though. Don't hesitate to get this. AND PARTS ARE READILY AVAILABLE!

More than worth the price.
This trimmer is excellent. Very powerful, smooth running, always starts on the first pull, quick throttle response, high quality centrifugal clutch on the trimmer head. I could go on, but this trimmer is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone.

A Solid Product, Good Value
I purchased this trimmer to clear weeds and grass from my 2 acre grove. Starts fairly easily, runs just like it's supposed to and seems pretty solid.

Work horse for the size!
A work horse of a weed eater for residential. I have thick brush surrounding my acre+ yard. This has the power to cut through all the vines and brush with no problems. The auto clutch in this weed eater works great, and spins up full power nearly instantly. Feels to be well balanced between cutting head and motor. For the price I don't think you'll find any better with a 7 yr warranty.

So far, so good
Ive only used this trimmer once since receiving it. It was fairly easy to assemble, and got it running with no problems. It mowed down some pretty thick and overgrown weeds without any problems (which is what i wanted). So overall, happy with purchase. The engine seems like it will be strong enough for at least medium-duty jobs.

Excellent Trimmer
This is a sweet line trimmer at a great price. Easy to assemble out of box. Started right up. Runs without the engine cutting in and out. Keeps even engine speed. Feeds line with just a touch -- best feeder I have ever had. One footnote: The engine will stall out, even when warm, with the choke fully open. Runs great at about 75% open. Simply means you can tune the air. I mention this because one customer reviewed that he could not get the engine started. Don't know if this was the problem but manipulating the choke is not a problem. All in all, this is a well-built and responsive machine. Maybe a little heavy for extended usage so you might need to rig a neck line for it.

This product performs great so far.
This product performs great so far. It is easy to start and has minimum vibration. It is light enough that my wrist and arms are not as fatigued as with my old grass edger.

Tricky assembly
I bought this product over a month ago. I tried to put it together myself but got stuck at the head trimmer. Uncertain how to, I decided to have the Home Depot guys at the stor put it together for me and so they did for about 15 mins or less. I started using it for the first time the next day. Starting this toy is so easy I did not have trouble at all first shot and the small engine started roaring......until i noticed somehing. Engine is on but the head is not turning or spinning. I gave the rev a squeeze still nothing. Gave anothe rev at the engine, longer this time, still nothing happened . I waited for a few minutes and again gave the engine a rev and that's when I noticed burnt plastic at the head trimmer. Quickly shut the engine off and examined the head trimmer and found out that the spindle from the shaft where the head is screwed has been spinning but the head wasn't. The plastic melted caused by the heat from the spinning spindle after a period of time. I brought it back to the guys at Home Depot to have them look into it. They're fixing it for me at no cost.
I wonder if this is a common flaw of this product and model.

difficult to start for this newbie
This is my first trimmer and I never used one before. It was difficult to start and the tap and go doesn't work as I expected. I had to repeatedly prime the pump and pull the starter before I got the trimmer going. I thought I would be able to tap in on the ground and the cord would lengthen... but that doesn't happen, so I turn off the trimmer and do it manually..... and then I have to deal with starting it again. As I said, this is my first trimmer and I have only used it once... hopefully it will get easier after more experience.

Easy start, more than enough power. A little heavy but knew that going in. All in all, I wouldn't buy anything different. I like it.

Great Trimmer.
Assembled in about 30 minutes. Starts easily. Use the primer bulb, then choke, then pull. No problem. Has a lot of power. I like the fact that the unit has a centrifugal clutch, meaning the string stops spinning at idle speed. Also, the clutch engages smoothly at the slightest blip of the throttle; so, it does not do the shimmy shake like other brands. You can still use it to trim at lower engine speeds and the clutch is still engaged. Also, the trimmer String that comes with it is very tough. Got tough new growth at the base of a tree? --No problem for this trimmer. Wind it up to full speed and hold on tight! I guess my only complaint would be that the cutter guard is a bit smaller than I would like.

Excellent Value
Hitachi makes a weedeater ? You bet they do !! It has all the quality you would expect from a commercial manufacturer like Hitachi. This one is great for lawns, and if you get into a tussle with a blackberry stalk or a small tree, just gun it and watch it go. Great implement, I love it. Can't wait to put on the circular saw blade. HInt: Buy a strap and connector, you will need one.

Starts with ease
After years of fighting my old weed-eater to get it started, I purchased this Hitachi after doing some research. It starts with ease and is very powerful for home use. With the 7 year warranty, I expect that this will be a great value purchase and last for many years.

Quality product
I did fairly extensive research on weed eaters, and purchased the Hitachi 21cc Straight Shaft Trimmer because it seemed comparable to some higher-priced professional weed eaters. After having used it several times for 25-30 min., I have been perfectly pleased with its quality and performance. In most respects, it appears the equivalent to the Husqvarna 28cc Straight Shaft Trimmer (which I have also used in the past), which I have seen priced $30 more than this one. A good value.

The best grass trimmer ever..
I owned an echo which was excellent but only lasted 5 years. This Hitachi has a 7 year warranty. It's a beast !!! Cuts better than any grass trimmer I have ever owned; including echo... There is no comparison, Hitachi is longer, stronger, easier to control, and cuts grass" like butter." This trimmer is the best on the market that I have ever seen. You will not be disappointed.

Overall this a great product and it's features are worth the price
This product is easy to use and it's features are worth the price. It's very easy to start, maneuver and easy to hold. The only down-fall is that after long use, my arms get sore, it would've been nice if it was a little lighter. Overall, a great product.

This is my second one, I love this trimmer!
This is my second trimmer as I wore through the bottom of the cutting head I used it so much. I have a part-time landscape maintenance company and this trimmer packs plenty of power, is easy to start and was very reliable. I just need to order a new cutting head and my old one will become my backup. For the price, this trimmer is a great deal. Besides, it is really a re-packaged Tanaka, which is a commercial brand.
