Q:If I do one coat of sanding sealer prior to this finish , do i need to sand lightly before applying the poly? And do i still need 4 coats or 3?

    Answer This Question

A:  Depends on the sanding sealer, Eva, but you really shouldn't need to do that. You will still need 4 coats of the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish to make sure that your surface is fully protected. You'll have to allow each coat to try for 2 hrs but if your coating has dried more than 24 hrs, you'll need to sand lightly before recoating! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Q:I see where you have commented that this product will yellow. Do you have a high traffic floor finish that will not yellow over a painted surface?

      Answer This Question

A:  With proper surface prep and application, Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Polyurethane will have a crystal clear finish. When applying over a painted surface, we do recommend applying in a test area first, since the polyurethane may react with the pigments found in some coatings and change in appearance. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:I don’t want the white-washed look of the nordicseal to turn yellow, and one question’s answer led me to believe it may. And I don’t think it’s considered a paint, so we wouldn’t have to wait 7 days after the seal? I don’t know of any other products like NordicSeal.

Q:I am using this on stained wood stair treads. How many times should it be applied for the maximum protection? Do I have to sand between the applications? How long should it take to cure before the next layer can be applied? Thanks.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help, Elle. Allow the Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Floor Finish Polyurethane to dry a minimum of 2 hours and before recoating. Keep in mind that lower temperatures and/or higher humidity may cause slower dry times. Recoat only when previous coats have dried clear and feel hard. If any coat has dried more than 24 hours, lightly sand before re-coating. A powder should develop when lightly sanded. A minimum of 4 coats is recommended to ensure the best protection. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  I prefer shellac for the color tint benefit but if that's not important to you then any sealer should do fine. Shellac gives that rich traditional look.

A:  also going to say no. it's been a week and I am seeing all sorts of scratches from my dogs. I made sure to cut their nails before allowing them on it too. it's simply from them walking too, nothing crazy. I used a mix of two older leftover cans of Rustoluem water based polys (not even floor specific) in my kitchen and they are holding up better than this floor specific finish throughout the rest of my house- I don't understand.

A:  I would say no, I currently have this product on my floors and love it, but having tried various products that will hold up under having dogs in the house, there are none. The closes you can get would be to purchase flooring that has aluminium oxide in the finish and is done at the factory. The factory process is much different than applying a product with aluminium oxide on existing floors. This is one reason that people who have dogs are going to laminate products that hold up much better to the nails of dogs.
