Q:Can I apply with a roller?
by|Jan 4, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Hi Jeff, we do not recommend applying our polyurethane finishes with a roller, since this may create lap marks, bubbles, or apply the coating too heavily. Instead, our Varathane Floor Finish Applicator may be used for large, flat surfaces to improve the ease of application:

Q:Current specifications listed say 500 sqft per gallon and 2 coats required. In the questions which are quite old it says 400sqft and 4 coats. Which is correct. 4 coats seem like quite a lot!

Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, Keri. Varathane Water Based Floor Finish Polyurethane has practical coverage of 400-500 sq. ft. per gallon, a minimum of 4 coats are required. Apply using a good quality, synthetic bristle brush, foam brush or applicator. Allow finish to dry a minimum of 2 hours and then recoat. Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity may cause slower dry times. Recoat only when previous coats have dried clear and feel hard. Multiple coats are required to produce a hard, durable floor.

A: Great question, John! Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane for Floors can be applied with a good quality, synthetic bristle brush, foam brush or applicator. For the larger areas, we recommend using an applicator for water-based floor polyurethanes to help prevent lap marks.
