Q:Does this leave a clear (we are going for the light natural wood) look or does it make it appear an "amber" tone as I've heard from other reviews? Thanks!

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Heather, our Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish Polyurethane is a crystal clear finish, and will not create an amber tone on wood flooring. If you are applying over a white or light color paint, be sure to apply thin coats, avoiding puddling, as a too thick or puddled application may leave a slight yellow hue on the paint. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

        Answer This Question

A:  You've come to the right place, Ryan. We don't recommend using Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Polyurethane on a floor or countertop because it is not a floor-grade or food-grade coating and will not hold up well in those types of environments. It will wear away quickly. We need to know more about your application to make the best recommendation for you. Please feel free to call us at (888) 683-5667 to discuss further. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

Q:The description says 1 gallon covers about 500 sq ft, but it the instructions say 4 coats are recommended. When it says it covers about 500 sq ft, does that mean one gallon will supply me with all 4 coats for 500 sq ft, or just one coat? (I guess what I'm asking is, if I have 500 sq ft, do I need 4 gallons to do 4 coats?)

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, and we are happy to clear things up! When it comes to a protective polyurethane floor finish, the thickness of the coating is the most important piece to ensure durability and scratch resistance. Our coverage recommendations are based on 1 coat, so for the example of a 500 ft² area, 4 gallons of our Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish Polyurethane would be needed to apply 4 coats at the proper thickness. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Cass! We recommend waiting at least 3 days before laying rugs back on the surface. Please keep in mind, cooler temperatures can extend the dry time of Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish Polyurethane. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  I would wait the 3 days. Especially if they are rubber backed rugs. This stuff dries pretty quickly compared to normal polyurethane sealers. But you still need to let the finish cure. It is one of the softest feeling finishes I've ever done.

Q:So will this yellow over time or not? The product description says non-yellowing but I have seen Rusto-leum comment replies that says it will yellow. I will be applying this to solid white oak floors (not stained, just natural wood) and want a clear, natural matte finish that will not "color" the natural finish. Will this "yellow"?

A:  Happy to clear things up, Jay! Rust-Oleum Varathane Floor Finish Water-Based will apply milky white and dry clear. It does not have an amber tone and will impart color to the wood or deepen in tone over time as an oil-base finish does. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Product Support Team at (800) 901-0411 with any further questions. We are here to help. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 4

                        Answer This Question

A:  I prefer to start with a semi gloss then top coat with matte finish.. The satin tends to leave a cloudy finish and may affect the overall appearance of the wood and grain itself

                        by|Jan 1, 2020

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Our Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish Polyurethane could be applied over the oil-based, however, the previous coats would have to have fully cured (7-10 days) to prevent adhesion issues between the two coatings. For ease of use and ensure a successful application, we recommend using either the oil or water-based polyurethane for the entire application. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2
