Q:Can this be installed over existing tile?
by|Feb 27, 2016

Answer This Question

A:  Yes, the TI-5 can be installed over existing tiles. Depending on the condition of the existing wall surface, additional silicone adhesive may be required to ensure contact between the substrate and the wall panel. Old ceramic tiles, if solidly adhered, do not need to be removed. All plastic tiles must be removed before installation. Any loose ceramic tiles must be removed or reattached. Old tiles and front edge ceramic tiles should be reset for appearance only. Any tile accessories must also be removed. Remove the bottom row of tile and cut a ventilation gap in the substrate. The surface must be dry, smooth and free of dust, soap scum or any other contaminates.

Q:I installed a tub surround like this which was purchased from Home Depot several years ago in a rental house. The tenants managed to break the soap holder and I have tried to repair it with a fiber glass repair kit which hasn't worked. Instead the break has gotten worse. I'm thinking about cutting out the damaged part and gluing another panel over it, however, I'm really not clear on how to repair it. The rest of the surround is fine. Any help will be appreciated.

            Answer This Question

A:  Unfortunately, there is no good solution for repairing the soap dish on the existing panel. Swan does offer consumers the ability to purchase individual replacement panels for all of our wall kits. Since the side and back panels overlap the corner panels, you can remove the broken panel and replace it. Although this will require some work and possibly new dry wall behind the affected panel, this would be your best solution. Your local Home Depot store can call for pricing and can special order the required panel to fix your wall kit.

A:  The TI-5 should fit your dimensions with no trimming required. The overlapping panels allow for flexibility to fit tub areas 29" to 32"D and 53" to 60"W. This should be the perfect solution for your home! We appreciate you considering a Swan product.

                Answer This Question

A:  Yes, you can cut the TI-5 back panel to accommodate a window. This can easily be accomplished using a saber saw with a fine tooth carbide blade. We do manufacture a window trim kit, SSWTK, that can be used with this unit. You can purchase the window trim kit via special order in your local Home Depot store using Part No. TK03610.018. Q:I would like to install this over an existing tile wall. The existing tile is wall mounted and sits approximately 1/8" of an inch proud of the wall. If I install this over the existing tile, will I have to trim out the edges to cover the old tile or is there some sort of lip that will sit flush with the wall.

                      Answer This Question

A:  The TI-5 tub wall does not have a lip on the edge of the panel to cover the old tile. Trim will be needed. We would suggest a plastic/PVC trim to cover the edge. Other information for installing on tile: Depending on the condition of the existing wall surface, additional silicone may be required to ensure contact between the tile and the wall panel. The tile, if solidly adhered, does not need to be removed. All plastic tiles must be removed. Must remove or reattach any loose ceramic tiles. Old tiles and front edge ceramic tiles should be reset for appearance only. Remove any tile accessories attached to the walls. The bottom row of tile must be removed and a ventilation gap, cut in the substrate. The surface must be dry smooth, and free of any dust, soap scum, or any other contaminates.

A:  Thank you for considering the TI-5 for your bath remodeling project. Yes, you can install the shower head and faucet on either side wall. You or your installer can drill the holes according to your placement dimensions using a router, saber saw or hole saw. The holes should be drilled 1/2" larger than the diameter of the plumbing outlets. Installation instructions are located online in the "Info & Guides" section of the product page for additional information.
