Q:What kind of load can these handle with a 1" stand-off?

Answer This Question

A:  This can easily handle a 1000 lbs load When concret is fully cured

by|Nov 27, 2018

A:  That's a loaded question as it depends on how plumb the post is installed and how securely it's fastened at the top, so you don't get any bending or side loads on it. When I set mine some concrete pushed up in the tube, and I spooned concrete 'fines' into the top of the tube thru the hole in the plate and tamped it with a bolt and struck it off flush at the top. That may or may not increase the tubes stiffness or strength, but it made me feel better! Simpson Strong-Tie should have a load rating for it on their website, or talk to their customer support.

Q:I would like to use these as a base for an 8ft post for a canopy and base for a hammock. If placed in concrete will this product be able with stand the weight of the hammock? and with stand holding the canopy with gust of wind? Just don't want a base that is easily pulled out of the ground/concrete.

A:  We provide the *allowable load capacities of our connectors, but it would be up to the Designer/ Engineer of Record to specify the appropriate connector based on the demand loads of the specific application, local building codes, etc. *Please visit strongtie.com or the current Wood Construction Connectors catalog for allowable loads. Thank you!

A:  This works very well for your fence if you are setting them in cement first. In stead of pouring cement around the post

          Answer This Question

A:  As per the other response, we do not have any products we can refer to for swing set applications as they have not been evaluated with regards to the forces that a swing may put on them. Thank you!

Q:How well do these posts work outdoors? I'm building a small foundation for a 8x8 plastic shed and need to elevate some pressure treated 4x4 runners with pressure treated plywood, several inches above hard ground with grass. I should use elevated posts the are galvanized instead?

              Answer This Question

A:  First I want to point out that the EPB bases must be installed in concrete. The EPB44 has the Simpson Strong-Tie® gray paint finish which provides a low level of corrosion protection. It can also be ordered with the hot-dip galvanized finish (EPB44HDG) which provides a medium level of corrosion protection and can be used in many applications with treated wood, but not all. Please see the Corrosion section of our website to determine the recommended finish for your specific application based on environment, type of treated wood being used, chemical retention, etc. Thank you!

A:  The EPB44 has an allowable download capacity of 3,465 lbs. The uplift capacity varies depending on wind/seismic design category and concrete; please see the load table on our website. This base requires a quantity of 8 - 16d common nails (0.162" diameter x 3 1/2" long). Thank you!

Q:I am looking at options for support to build my home. I've seen many use concrete footings, and they just place wood on top, but it doesn't seem very secure. I thought the elevated post bases would be a more secure way to affix 4x4's. Is this a good option ?

A:  It would be up to the Designer/Engineer of Record to specify the appropriate connectors based on framing layout, demand loads, local building codes, etc. We can provide information specific to our products (i.e. allowable loads, required fasteners, etc.), but the Designer/Engineer can assist with design advice and best options. Thank you!

Q:Can we use a through bolt along with nails to secure the 6x6 post on this base? If yes what size (diameter) will it take?

                        Answer This Question

A:  I can't believe a Simpson engineer would recommend only 16d nails that are 3 1/2" long in holes that are vertically in line (should be offset so as not to be in the same vertical grain line), and nails that will cross close to each other in the middle (or collide with each other and bend or deflect)--a perfect storm for splitting the wood--especially the outer ones that are only 1" from the edge. This is from actual field experience--not an engineering book. Most large timbers you buy nowadays already have splits started at the ends--let's not aggravate the situation!

A:  The EPB66 is only intended to be installed with nails (16d common - 0.162" diameter x 3 1/2" long). The larger hole is a pilot hole used in the manufacturing process. Thank you!
