Q:I want to put a 4x4 post in a plastic whiskey barrel with a bird house on top. How long is the pipe that would be in concrete? Would the post be stable?

A: Hi NYinTexas, thank you for your message. The minimum embedment depth is 9.5" and it would not be recommended for a free-standing application. More than likely, you would experience movement at the top of the post. If you need more information or have additional questions, please contact the Simpson Strong-Tie Customer Service team at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

A: Hello, This is Ricardo with Simpson Strong-Tie. Per our specs, the EPB requires 4" side concrete coverage on all for sides of the 4x4 wood post. You will want to consider this when designing your concrete footing. Our Customer Service team is available to talk with you directly and take you through a step-by-step solution. Please call us at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

A: Hi Silke, This is Ricardo with Simpson Strong-Tie. Post installed base connections are not recommended for free-standing structures or fences larger than 4ft without any additional lateral support. You might want to consider either the CBSQ or MPBZ which will provide more support at the base. Customer Service team is available to talk with you directly and take you through a step-by-step solution. Please call us at 800-999-5099. We look forward to hearing from you.

Q:can these be used for fence posts? It seems they would be so much easier than digging deep holes.

A: Hi Lovstrck, this is Ricardo from Simpson Strong-Tie. We would not recommend the use of this post base for fences as the fence is not top supported. Please call us as 800.999.5099 to discuss options for your project.

A: No, You need to dig a hole yo pour the concrete that they should be set in. Just no for many other reasons too.
by|Jul 17, 2021
A: I wouldn't. These are for decks, etc. There isn't any lateral strength in them. They depend on downward forces for stability. You would not have enough force unless your fence was 20 feet tall. Rent an augur and dig your holes deeper. It will be less expensive that way as well.

A: 1/2 inch bolt fits
by|Jan 20, 2023
A: The two large holes in vertical plates are 9/16" diameter. Note that those holes are not meant for installation of a through bolt. Those are tooling holes made by a manufacturing die tool. Post needs to be fastened to the base with 16d(0.162")x3 1/2" common wire nails with hot-dip galvanized finish. Regards.
