Q:Can this be used without using the bolt into the concrete just to keep the post off the concrete to keep moisture down?

Answer This Question

A:  but I need to be able to move the post around and this base looks like it would keep the post from sitting in water... Surely there is some sort of 'stand' if this is not it? Any ideas?

A:  Since it just sits on the slab I would not recommend it, I just used a hammer drill and put in a cement screw and it worked great

    Answer This Question

A:  Sorry I did not have to pour concrete. I did drill to install the anchors and the concrete was approx 5 in thick. I installed large 6x6 cedar posts, everything is solid!!

A:  The ABW66Z requires a 1/2" diameter anchor. The anchor bolt type, length and embedment is specified by the Designer. Thank you!

A:  I would not use anything smaller than a 1" expansion anchor minimum of 4" long. This is presuming you are attaching the standoff on a concrete support.

Q:What size anchor bolt fits through the bottom and what size screws do you use to secure the post?

          Answer This Question

A:  I used 1/2” anchor bolts (make sure the are galvanized or stainless). Also you don’t use screws to secure the post. Because it is an application where the fastener will experience significant shearing nails are recommended here. Again make sure they are galvanized. I would do a quick web search for Simpson strong ties online catalog that has all of this information.

Q:What is the difference between this item (ABW44Z) and the ABA44Z?

            Answer This Question

A:  The ABW fastens to the post on all 4 sides. The ABA only fastens to the post on 2 sides. So, the ABW has a stronger load rating.

A:  The difference is the product dimensions. Model ABA44Z has a depth of 3.063, height of 3.125 and width of 3.563 compared to ABW44Z's 3.563 in depth, 2.25 in height and 3.563 in width.

A:  I'm not sure what you are asking but I can tall you this is what you need to protect a supporting wood column from a concrete support. I used a 1/2" expansion anchor drilled into the concrete and then set the wood post into the galvanized base with galvanized screws. This procedure meets all necessary Codes.

Q:Can this be used to attach a 4x4 post to concrete patio for use in a railing system?

                  Answer This Question

A:  Post bases do not provide adequate resistance to prevent members from rotating about the base and therefore are not recommended for non-top-supported installations (such as fences, railings or unbraced carports). We do not have a base to recommend for railing applications to existing concrete. Thank you!

Q:I'm replacing a post that's holding up a small corner (7'x10') of the house, which seems to be doing fine without the post (it has separated an inch from the beam). Will this work fine? I'm mostly concerned about the 1" gap. Will it collapse/bend under the weight?

                      Answer This Question

A:  sounds like your problem is at the attched beams or supports...Anchoring the deck or roof or floor to the proper upper support beams is critical to keep the post level and upright ... Do not worry about the 1" gap as it is stronger than the post itself. it helps keep termites away from the wood as a disruptor to their food source. Very strong metal. I have used these for years with no problems what so ever.

Q:Description says for 6" x 6" nominal post size. Will this post base work with a rough cut 6" x 6" post with actual 6" x 6" dimensions?

                      Answer This Question

A:  As per my research: There are 2 different types of 6x6's - a "rough," as you mentioned, which is closer to 6x6 and the other which is actually 5-1/2 x 5-1/2. As I understand, Simpson makes two different post bases: a "rough," which is designated by the "R" symbol and actually 6" x 5-3/16", and the "Z" model without the "R", which is 5-1/2 x 5-1/2", which will not fit the rough. In an ideal situation, you would either need to utilize the non-rough wood, or purchase the post bases with the "R" (or Rough) designator; although, people have shaved the wood where it meets the base.

A:  I have used them for actual 6x6 posts.. but it is tight. the sides can be hammered to fit it tightly. using heavy duty galv. nails to set the post with a good bolt to anchor it.. I like this kind of post bracket as it sets the wood abover the concrete line... I seal the bottoms of my posts with used car oil, and or sealer to keep termites out.. but paint will work as well.

A:  The ABW66Z will not work with a rough (actual size) 6x6. A nominal 6x6 has actual sawn dimension of 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". Please see the ABW66RZ, specifically designed for 6x6 rough posts. Thank you!
