The indoor ( evaporator unit ) has filters that can be removed , cleaned and reinstalled. If the indoor unit has additional build up you can contact a HVAC professional to partially disassemble for a more thorough cleaning. Lastly make sure your indoor units drain tube is not restricted.

A:  The unit itself would be safe. Wouldnt require a very big one as the output may be too much in a small space. There will be some wiring and piping on the outside that would have to be concealed so it is exposed to the dog.
