This kit will not work with the keys provided. A:  Schlage original pins come in more than 5 lengths but this set has pins of only five lengths. It’s possible you will have the correct five lengths, or lengths that are close enough, but no guarantee.

A:  As long as the tumbler is a five-pin tumbler and it uses a standard Schlage key (like a normal house key ) it will work. This kit just swaps the tumbler pins to use the included keys.

Starting from the tip of the key and begin by counting the valleys cut into the key, which is where the pins drop into. If you count five cuts (of different depths), then you have a 5-pin key cylinder. A:  when you remove the cylinder you will see how may pins it has. or you can check your key and count the depressions. 5 depressions/valleys will be a 5 pin key

A:  If you count the number of grooves between the teeth of the key, that will indicate the number of pins. Each pin in the lock assembly falls into one of these groves and lines up the lock mechanism to to turn. When the wrong key is inserted, the pins are not flush with the lock tumbler and it will not turn.

A:  You will need to visit the Schlage web page to verify model numbers. This kit works with most Schlage home entry door hardware, but not special locks such as Smartkey locks. They have their own kit. Each kit will do six locks as advertised. The kit works by changing the order of the colored tumblers to match the supplied keys. Their are five tumblers in each lock, that creates a very large, but not astronomical, number of combinations. In theory, you can buy another kit, but use the tumbler color code of the first kit to make another six locks use the same key as the first kit. Keys, of course, can be duplicated at any hardware.

A:  The pins in this kit are merely color coded to size (foolproof method of assembly). If you buy multiple kits you can re-key as many locks as you need as long as you have enough of the correct size pin - the color of the pins may be different in different kits which is why you'll need the check the size of each pin not the color.

Note: Old, existing key is required during re-keying of new key procedure. A:  The keys that come with the re-key kit are all the same and the pins supplied with it are matched to the keys, that is they are matched to the keys sent in the re-key kit. However, all the pins are interchangeable within the plug, (the part the key is inserted into) so if you have another Schlage key you might be able to use the same re-key kit with the pins in a different order to re-key four locks to two different keys. If the cuts on the two keys are similar enough you could just insert the pins in the plug until you find the proper order for the second key you want to use. Just remember that the pins in the plug must come to exactly the top of the plug, the trim line, when the key is inserted. If any pin is below the trim line when the key is inserted into the plug the lock will not work, and if you put it back together you will not be able to take it apart again. If any pin is above the trim line you can carefully file the top of it down to the proper length and the lock will work. Another solution is to buy two re-key kits with different key codes, this is more cost but you will know that the keys and pins match exactly. Hope this answer helps.

To rekey to different keys you'll need to purchase 2 kits, but when purchasing the second kit, make sure the kit code is different to ensure you'll be getting two different set of keys. The code number I'm referring to is found on the cover of the yellow insert, at the lower right hand corner. A:  No. All same. Buy two kits. Rekey two deadbolts with one kit and two doorknobs with second set. Keep the extra keys for when you might loose a set. Use unused keys to make any additional new keys made. Or Buy two kits, throw out one of the set of provided keys, replace all four pin sets so only one key is used for all locks. You will have three keys that work. Have any more new keys made from your extra new key.

A:  The kit contains pins to rekey six locks and three identical keys. If your locks all have cylindrical pins this kit should work.

A:  It would be easiest to get two kits. All the keys in a kit match, so use one kit for the knob and another kit for the deadbolt. With 100 different kits, it would be unlikely to get two kits that match.

A:  Yes, if you can remove the lock and take it to a locksmith a key can be made or the lock re-keyed. Or a locksmith can come to the house and re-key or make a key but this will be expensive. If you can find the same type lock replacing it should not be too hard for you or a handyman to do.
