Q:Does Centipede look a lot different than St. Augustine? I have St. Augustine in some parts of my yard, the rest is mostly weekds or dirt patches.

    Answer This Question

A:  St. Augustine has a broader leaf and is a little darker green. I have St. Augustine in shady areas under my oak trees and seems to do well there, however St. Aug. did not do well in my full sun areas (NE FL). In full sun you can't beat centipede. Centipede also stays shorter and doesn't require as frequent mowing as St. Aug. and centipede doesn't have the runners that invade plant beds as bad as St. Aug. If centipede did better in shade, I would have an all centipede lawn.

A:  St. Augustine has thicker and coarser grass blades. Centipede has finer blades

A:  Hi Ed, Yes, Centipede looks very similar to St. Augustine. Centipede (and sometimes Zenith Zoysia) is commonly used to overseed St. Augustine lawns when St. Augustine grass seed isn’t available. Hope this helps - thanks!

A:  Hello, Recommended spreader settings are listed on the bag. In the event your model of spreader is not listed you will want to apply 1 lb. of seed for every 400 square feet. Thank you

Q:I planted my entire yard (top soil) with seed last year having good success. There are a few bare spots due to shade but overall very satisfied. Is it a good idea to reseed the yard completely or just the bare spots. The grass is established and I'm thinning out the weeds before fertilizing. Thanks

A:  Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, We reached out to MFG for more information and below is their response. “ The entire area may be overseeded if it is thin, however this may not be necessary. If you only have a few bare areas, we would recommend only seeding in these areas. "

A:  Yes, it will choke it out. Centipede grass "runs" or invades other grasses and will take over in areas that receive ample sunlight.

A:  It takes time but it will. You can help by manipulating fertilizer. Centipede can succeed with less nitrogen than other grass so don't over fertilize . I have gotten a pretty good centiped "take over" by using a low nitrogen fertilizer and not fertilizing except every couple of years but I am on a red clay/sandy hill. I started 12 years ago with a mix of dry harsh climate grasses to try to stop erosion when I cleared and tilled the house site of about 4 acres. I had a small (<6 oz) of centipede mixed in. It is now 75% Centipede and thick padded like carpet. After first 2 years I haven't watered. Mow it high. The solid centipede only needs mowing every couple of weeks here.
