Q:Does the included mulch mean that straw is not needed?
          by|Jul 19, 2022

          Answer This Question

A:  Hello! The mulch is intended to help make the application of the small grass seed easier and improve seed to soil contact. Straw is not necessary, but a light layer can help in situations where erosion may be an issue.

Q:I raked our planting area on 2/22/22 and put seed down on the 2/23/22, and then lightly raked it into the loosened soil. We have watered it daily when we did not have rain in the forecast. It is now 33 days later. Shouldn't I see something by now?

            Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Centipede grass is one of the slowest germinating grasses. When the weather is warm enough to facilitate germination (75 degrees and rising during the day, no lower than 60 degrees at night), we would expect to see germination around 30 days. If the weather has not stayed consistent, germination can take longer. Please feel free to reach out to Customer Service at 1-800-285-7333 to further discuss your situation in more detail!

Q:I need fertilizer and top soil cover after seed?

              Answer This Question

A:  Hello, a starter fertilizer can be used. Top soil is not needed, as it contains mulch, however you will need to rake the seed gently into the soil. Thank you.

A:  Hi Vicente. Thank you for your question. When using any grass seed, you will want to place your seed on an amended soil. Use the Kellogg's Topper: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kellogg-Garden-Organics-2-cu-ft-Topper-Lawn-Soil-for-Seed-and-Sod-653/100427389 Or the Scotts Lawn soil, if available, for best results. (Selections may vary depending on location). After amending your soil, apply your seed and then cover it with 1/8th to NO MORE than ¼ inch of topper. After the topper is applied, then you can add a “StarterFertilzer” to help with faster sprouting and root development. https://www.homedepot.com/s/starter%2520fertilizer%2520lawn%2520fertilizer?NCNI-5 Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Q:Can Centipede grass seed be sowed in fall in central Texas? What are planting steps if area is full of weeds?

                Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Centipede is a warm-season grass that should be planted in the spring or early summer when the daytime temperatures are 75 degrees and rising and nighttime temperatures are no lower than 60 degrees. We would not recommend planting this or any warm-season grass in the fall, as it will not germinate and establish properly as the temperatures cool down. As for prepping an area for seed that has weeds, we would recommend starting with a weed control product this fall to help control what's there currently and a pre-emergent for crabgrass (if needed) early in the spring. Just keep in mind that most crabgrass and weed killer products require a waiting time between application and seeding. For additional information, please call Customer Service at 1-800-285-7333."
