Q:Do these planters become top-heavy? Will they blow over in higher winds. I live up on a hill and it can get pretty windy.

Answer This Question
A: Hi Alex, water collects in the area below the planting tray creating the water reservoir. The weight of the water in the base makes these planters very sturdy even in high wind conditions.

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out. This planter will hold about 6.5 gallons of water in the bottom of the planter. We believe as long as you don't have a tree style plant in the planter then you will be fine with winds. Another option is you can put stones in the bottom of the planter as well to give it a little bit more weight. A: The removable tray in some of our planters may be quite tight. The trick to removing the tray is to push down firmly on one corner and lift up on the opposite corner. Don't be afraid to use as much force as needed to get the tray to pop out of place, the tray will bend and flex around the walls of the planter and this is fine; the material is extremely durable and you will not damage it by doing this.

Q:Confused about the self watering feature
This planter only has a tray sitting above the water reservoir. The tray has several rows with small wholes in the center as well as a plug. There is no wick or fill tube. How is the soil able to wick water???

Answer This Question
A: With the water reservoir, capillary action allows water in the reservoir to soak upward keeping the soil and plant roots moist creating a "self-watering" effect.
Regular watering is required for the first few weeks giving the root system time to develop. Once the roots have grown down into the troughs of the planters, the plants will be able to pull moisture from the reservoir. With this system, you will find the potting mix stays moist longer than traditional planters. To avoid over-saturation an overflow hole allows excess water to drain out.
Although "self-watering" containers still need to be watered, they need to be watered less frequently than your typical planter.
How often you need to water will depend on a number of factors including, climate, sun exposure, rain exposure, etc. As a general rule, we recommend watering once per week once your plants are established. Many will likely find they will need to water less frequently than this. If the potting mix begins feeling dry simply continue to add water until excess begins coming out of the overflow drain hole. This will ensure the potting mix is well soaked and the reservoir completely filled. You will get into a routine with your plants after a couple of weeks.

A: I don't agree water could soak "upward." I would take lengths of cotton clothesline, entwining them in the soil/root area & dangle the other ends of the lines thru drainage holes down into the water-as soil dries it will suck water up the lines.

A: Hi there, Drainage holes of this planter are not pre-drilled as you can use this indoors. Depending on the desired use of the planter, you may need to drill the drainage holes yourself.
