A:  For several hundred dollars and your elbbow-grease you can have a thousand dollars worth of furniture. I've done a five-drawer chest and a two-drawer computer/writing desk with fold-down drawer for keyboard. Although parawood is a hardwood I tried different stains and pretreament combinations inside the back pieces of the bureau. I wanted a nice sort of honey oak finish. I had great success with liberal use of Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner toweled off and followed very shortly with a dark, oil-based Spanish Oak stain that looked like dark walnut in the can. It came off the parawood evenly (with some rubbing, don't leave your stain on too long) and left a light, natural-looking oak finish. I used Minwax Finishing Wax as the topcoat, several layers with drying time between applications. Both pieces are fantastic and better-looking than what I can find in stores--black, white, java or espresso. Boring The pieces match an old mission-style bedside table perfectly. I find the slight differences in the woodgrain of parawood attractive and everyone is impressed.

A:  I don't know actual weight capacity, but I have a couple of heavy objects on shelves and there is no problem. It's quite sturdy.
