    Answer This Question

A:  I would say, no. If you tried, you would need to use the "HT" version. I think it stands for High Temperature. I would ask a roofer if putting a role roof over this. I'm not sure it would be wise, but I'n not a professional roofer.

            Answer This Question

A:  This product is intended to be used under shingles. I don't believe the manufacturer will warrant this proposed application in any way.

            by|Jul 14, 2021

A:  I would buy the HT High Temperature Ice & Water, not the standard type. High temperatures will cause the regular type to melt and run (if there is room for it to drip between any holes.

A:  Dear Spyder: Yes, GCP Ice & Water Shield can be applied over your existing shingles and will help to seal the surface to prevent water leaks. Be sure to overlap the pieces by 6+ inches, and ‘roll’ the overlapped section with a J-roller (available from Home Depot) to improve adhesion. Also ‘roll’ the edges to improve adhesion. With your location in Florida, I’m sure the color of your new metal roof is also white or silver, to reflect the sun’s heat. I hope this is helpful. Mark

A:  My gut says you will need to remove the existing shingles first then lay the underlayment. It has an adhesive on one side. You can contact GCP directly for more application advice. They have some very good installation video's on their website. Hope this is helpful.

Q:Is this equivalent to the GAF Weatherwatch? or what are the advantages? Thanks

                Answer This Question

A:  Both products are attempting to protect the roof from the same problems: water & ice damage. However, the GAF product has a mineral surface instead of the membrane surface on the GCP product. I can't tell you which does a better job as I have experience with only the Grace ice & water shield. I like the Grace product as it is pretty easy to mold into valleys.

A:  Dear Joe: Yes, but not as a substitute for flat roofing material, e.g. EPDM or TPO , if you need to cover a large part of the roof. Plus it must be covered to avoid long term sun exposure. I hope this is helpful. Mark

A:  It is not an insulation, it is a moisture barrier to seal out water. Great for what it is designed.

A:  NB, This product has no insulating properties, it is meant to reduce ice & water damage on your roof.

A:  Dear NB: No. Grace Ice & Water Shield is an excellent solution to waterproof your roof and prevent leaks, e.g. from ice dams in the winter. It isn't expensive, so we covered our entire roof with it before we installed new shingles. Insulation is entirely different. If you are replacing your roof, now is the perfect time for an upgrade. Install Grace Ice & Water Shield, then 2+ inches of XPS foam board on the roof before you install new shingles / roofing. Seal all of the joints between the foam board panels (and perimeter) to block air and water leaks. DAP 230 or HVAC mastic work well for joints and small gaps. I hope this is helpful, Mark

A:  No, the Ice and Water Shielding is limited to protecting the roof's sub-sheeting, it has little or no R value for providing insulation to the interior attic spaces.

                          Answer This Question

A:  Yes, as long as you are putting it on a flat, dry surface. I installed it directly to the plywood roof sheathing and shingled over it. That was at least 15 years ago, never had any leaks. If you have a mild pitch roof make sure you have sufficient overlap between each row (coarse).

A:  A good rule of thumb is that the product is appropriate at whatever slope is normally acceptable for the specific sloped roof covering. For example, if the roof covering on a specific project is designed for slopes of 3 inches in 12 inches (7 cm in 30 cm) or higher, then GCP’s underlayments under that roof covering are also appropriate at slopes of 3 inches in 12 inches (7 cm in 30 cm) or higher.

A:  Dear MP: Yes! A shallow pitched roof is ideal for GCP Ice & Water Shield -- because a low pitched roof sheds water less effectively, and if you live in an area with cold winters you have a higher risk of ice dams. When I redid the roofs on my own homes, I covered the entire roof with GCP Ice & Water Shield. The cost is not significant compared to the typical "3' from the edge and every valley", and now we know the entire roof is protected. In short: highly recommended. Mark

                              Answer This Question

A:  Dear El: Grace Ice & Water Shield cannot be left exposed to the sun, etc. It will stick to concrete, as long as the concrete is clean, dry and warm. So the best flashing solution depends on the actual design of this structure, local weather and how/where you need to shed water. For example, thin aluminum flashing rapidly corrodes along the shore in a salt air environment. For my personal house along the shore we used Grace Ice & Water Shield (applied in >55 degree F temperatures and rolled with a J roller) then covered with thin stainless steel flashing, which physically sheds most water and protects the GCP underneath. In short, good flashing is in the details. I hope this is helpful, Mark
