Answer This Question

Q:Will this go over or under drip edge?
by|Oct 29, 2020

Answer This Question

A:  This goes over, so install the drip edge first. Think of the water flowing down - every layer should overlap in a way that there is no chance water will go under.

by|Oct 31, 2020

A:  Dear Juve: GCP Ice & Water Shield should be installed first, and should wrap over the edge of the roof. Then the drip edge should be installed. Then a SECOND layer of GCP Ice & Water Shield should be installed, with the lower edge covering the top of the drip edge. See the installation guide for this product on the Home Depot site, in the section titled "Info & Guides". Also do a Web search for "Proper installation of Grace Ice & Water Shield" at Gcpat for all of the manufacturer's installation tips. It is also a good idea to cover the entire roof with GCP Ice & Water Shield, to block costly water leaks. That's what I did on my own house; the cost is not significant. I hope this is helpful, Mark

Q:Or is a different Grace premium ice and water shield I should be using?

    Answer This Question

A:  Dear Bacher: Yes, Grace Ice & Water Shield is excellent for asphalt shingle roofs too. When we reroofed my personal house, I covered the entire roof -- not just the band along the edge and the valleys. This doesn't cost much more, and now I know that a costly water leak is much less likely -- period. In short, highly recommended. Be sure it is applied correctly, particularly around dormers and other roof penetrations. Each side should be applied in a particular order - working from the bottom up like the flashing around a window.. It should also extend up the side of dormers by at least 6 inches -- or a foot if you have snow in the winter. I hope this is helpful, Mark

    Answer This Question

A:  Dear Giblet: You should find out the specific type of roofing adhesie and contact GCP to see if it will affect Ice & Water Shield. Without these details, it would be impossible to provide a solid answer. I hope this is helpful. Mark

Q:Is this product safe for a vegetable garden liner?

    Answer This Question

A:  I wouldn't recommend this product for use as a garden liner. It is not water permeable so you are going to have issues with rot. There are products better suited for use in a garden such as the Vigoro 4 ft. x 50 ft. Matrix Grid Landscape Fabric, which is also much cheaper.

    by|Aug 27, 2020

A:  I don't know but I seriously doubt that this product would be considered "food safe" material in any manner.

A:  I'm not sure what you are intending to prime, but this product is intended as an underlayment for shingles. The shingles are applied directly to it.

Q:Looking to seal an area between a porch and camper and need a product thst is safe for rubber roofs.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello! Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. It would definitely seal a camper roof. The only downside might be that the product is not UV resistant, so if you don't cover the membrane with a finish material to block sunlight, eventually the membrane would break down. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. -The Home Depot

Q:Should I use this or weather guard for underlayment for a flat roof?

      Answer This Question

A:  Self-adhesive membranes like Grace Ice and Water Shield are ideal for standard residential roofs, covered by shingles, a metal roof, etc. A flat roof requires special roofing, e.g. rolls of EPDM,TPO or PVC, with a solar-reistant layer on top. Shingles cannot be used on a flat roof. It is possible for a homeowner to install flat roofing material, but you would need to do some research and review the installation requirements in detail. You should also consident installing sheets of foam board on the roof, before the roofing is applied -- to boost insulation. XPS foam board, e.g. Foamular, is best; it does not absorb water. I hope this is helpful. Mark

A:  I would and I do but you do have to have some pitch to get the water off.

      by|Jun 21, 2020

A:  No. I've looked thru the manufacturer's literature several times & they always state that this product is for use under shingles on a sloped roof. Leave the pitch to the shingle vendors, but definitely not a flat roof.

      by|May 28, 2020

A:  Yes .Make sure to apply properly. it'll work good.

          Answer This Question

A:  Jeff, This if from the manufacturer's product brochure: Grace Ice & Water Shield roofing membrane is used as an underlayment for sloped roof. Never any mention of use with a flat roof. Also, this product can not be left exposed to UV rays for more than 90 days.

          by|May 13, 2020

A:  Dear Jeff: How well it sticks depends on how clean and dry the top layer of your roof is. The adhesive on this product is very sticky and it should seal your leak -- but it all depends on the surface and preparation. If your flat roof is coated with sand, for example, this would block a good seal. Depending on the size and type of leak you are trying to fix, you could also try other products, e.g. Henry Roof Leak Repar -- an asphalt based paste that can be applied to seal cracks and leaks, even on a wet roof.
