Q:It doesn't seem very safe that the nuts are visible (and accessible) from the outside. Will this work with shorter screws?

A:  You can always grind them enough so they can't be taken out normally, then use a grinder to break them off when the time comes.

A:  I built this into a wooden gate that latches to a 4x4 post. I agree that visible (and accessible) nuts on the outside are less safe,..., so I did not use the 2 bolts that were included in the packaging. Instead I used 4 screws that were slightly smaller than the 4 square holes. It would be easier for someone to climb the gate or surrounding structure than it would be to unlatch the slide bolt.

A:  You can use carriage bolts on the outside. A hasp would work better for security.

A:  You can use alternate screws, however the holes in the plate are rather large. So, you would have to be sure to use washers if the head of the screw does not cover the holes.

A:  No, it does not. I had to make a screw hole in the center of the slide assembly to be able to install the carriage bolts from the outside to the inside, as a proper installation should be. If you attempt to place the carriage bolts on the outside, the bolt slider does not have enough clearance for the washer and nut assembly.

A:  While the latching body has holes designed for small carriage bolts that are included in the hardware you can use a shouldered screw or bolt that is large enough to pass through the mounting holes or simply add a washer over screw or bolt.

A:  Duh, No it is NOT safe if attached that way...so I mounted the latch with the bolts coming in from the OUTSIDE and attached the nut and washer on the inside. My gate was just thick enough to make this work well.

Q:I'm thinking of using this on my vinyl fence, but the fence post is rather wide. Does anybody have experience with it on a vinyl fence? And did the screws work or do they just rip out, since the vinyl fence post is hollow? If anybody has a good suggestion, I'd be grateful. Thank you!

                Answer This Question

A:  While not familiar with all manufacturers of vinyl fences, most vinyl fences are made from pvc and are not very thick enough to accept self tapping screws that would stand the test of time. I have used nut-serts in the past that anchor into metal or plastic and allow a standard bolt to be used . I have also used large rivits such as the ones used to mount power window regulators to car door frames that you can source from most auto parts suppliers. Unfortunatley both require specialty tools to install that may not make it cost effective.

A:  Your best bet would be to take the top off of the hollow fence post and put a piece of wood inside of the fence post and use lag bolts. Another option would be to use bolts to bolt all of the way through. You would need a wood spacer for this as well or you could get some gutter ferrules and cut them to length to use as spacers inside the fence post. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ferrule-5-in-and-7-in-White-Gutter-Screws-10-Pack-33047PK/100002696
