Q:Why 89 octane? Would 87 octane, but ethanol free not be a better choice?
by|Jun 22, 2023

Answer This Question
A: Hello! Thank you for your inquiry. ECHO recommends to use only fresh gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89 through 93 (mid-grade to premium) at all times. Today's emission certified engines are adjusted leaner and combined with the use of fuel containing 10% ethanol results in higher internal engine temperatures. Use of regular unleaded 87 octane fuel could cause detonation inside the combustion chamber which will result in severe internal engine damage and is not covered by ECHO's product warranty. Using fuels that have an octane rating of 89 or higher will help protect the engine from the harmful effects of detonation. Regular unleaded 87 octane or lower gasoline may not contain enough of the detergent additives that are needed in a 2-stroke engine to keep varnish, gum, and tar deposits from forming which can shorten engine life.
