A:  Hi mark, thanks for writing in with your question. Yes, it is a good idea to use the Concrete Bonding Primer No. 880 before applying the Semi-Transparent Stain to promote adhesion. The concrete should also be etched until it feels like 150-grit sandpaper before priming. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

Q:For an outdoor stamped concrete patio should i apply a sealer over the stain for protection and semi gloss finish, or is sealer a part of the stain?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi Chad - Thank you for your questions! Our Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain is a durable, stand-alone product, so applying a separate sealer on top isn't necessary. However, if you prefer a glossy finish, our Wet-Look Sealer can be applied on top. To ensure a long-lasting finish, we recommend removing the existing finish completely, etching the bare concrete, then priming the surface with our Concrete & Masonry Bonding Primer before staining (https://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-Gal-Concrete-and-Masonry-Bonding-Primer-88001/100129649). Best wishes for your project! - Sara

Q:Can I use this to stain unsealed slate?
        by|May 18, 2020

        Answer This Question

A:  Probably because unsealed would be porous. Try it on a piece of the material, or side or bottom first to see if you like the result.

A:  Hi Sunshine, Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, we don't recommend applying this product to unsealed slate. We currently don't have a floor coating we can recommend for slate surfaces, so you may want to reach out to your local Home Depot for some suggestions on a different product that will adhere properly to slate. Best wishes for your project! - Sara

          Answer This Question

A:  Hi Sam, thank you for your question and interest in our products. If your deserved look and coverage are achieved in one coat, an additional coat is not needed. However, keep in mind that two coats are recommended to ensure the most successful application. For your square footage, you would need one gallon to apply two coats. Hope this info helps. Happy staining, and best of luck with your project! -Joanna
