Q:Is this the best one for kitchen?

    Answer This Question

A:  That depends on a personal preference. This is a BC extinguisher and only puts out liquid fuel fires like grease and oil and puts out electrical fires. It is not effective on paper or trash fires. This extinguisher uses sodium bicarbonate, baking soda, as the main ingredient in the powder in the extinguisher and will not fuse to hot metal like standard ABC powder for paper and trash fires, liquid fuel fires, and electrical fires. This is the larger of the BC extinguishers we make.

Q:How do I clean up an oven after has been sprayed thoroughly by a fire extinguisher is it toxic?
        by|Jan 4, 2022
        1 Answer
        Answer This Question

A:  Hello. Our dry chemical agents are considered non-toxic and safe, but by government regulation are classified as nuisance dust. As with any form of nuisance dust exposure they can produce irritation to the eyes, nose and throat as well as temporary vision and shortness of breath. Direct exposures can also sometimes trigger or aggravate an existing asthmatic condition present in some people. The brief dry chemical agent exposure typically associated with hand portable fire extinguisher discharges are typically limited to a matter of seconds and are therefore classified as acute exposures. In most cases, dry chemical extinguishing agent residues can be swept, wiped, vacuumed or washed clean. Electrical contacts directly exposed to dry chemical residues should be cleaned with electric contact cleaner. With the yellow colored "Multipurpose" A:B:C types of agent however, it is important to understand that they are designed to melt at around 250 degrees Fahrenheit to produce a clear, thin oxygen sealing residue for the effective extinguishment of class "A" fires. Under these conditions, the removal of the "multipurpose" dry chemical agent residue will sometimes require the scrubbing of that surface with an alcohol based cleaning medium or solution of hot water and baking soda. Unprotected metal surfaces exposed to heat and "multipurpose" agents will sometimes later display various degrees of surface corrosion if they were not properly cleaned. Never use ammonia based cleaners to clean up "Multipurpose" A:B:C dry chemical extinguishing agents. For more information, you can call us at 1-800-880-6788.

            Gets dust everywhere, but works
I hate to write a review after having a kitchen fire but I have to buy a new one because...I had a kitchen fire. So, I was cooking and the bacon grease caught on fire on the pan. Never saw that coming. I opened the oven, screamed, and my husband, and then pulled out the fire extinguisher I put under the sink when we bought the house nine years ago. That's right. The puppy worked after nine years. Apparently, it's good for 12 years! Honestly, I have to say this is probably the best $20 I ever spent. Saved my house, my oven, and my life. It only hurt my sheet pan and my pride. Do note - and I mean in general, try to avoid fires, but, it's worth noting - This gets the dry chemicals everywhere! EVERYWHERE. You can't avoid it. It's just the nature of a fire extinguisher, but I had no idea. And I'd say, generally, for your kitchen, the dry chemicals are great! Also, it's non-toxic - still don't breathe it in, but hey gotta put all those coronavirus masks to good use, right?

This little guy just saved my house!
It finally occurred to my husband and myself that we had totally spaced having a fire extinguisher for the house. Blew my mind that we didn't think of it. We bought two of these. One for the kitchen and one for the deck by the grill. Bought several of the red ones for the house, back yard, and shop. As of one month ago we had them all mounted and in their places. As it took a couple of weeks for my husband to get around to mounting them, I kept messing with them. Reading the instructions, mainly. I'd never had to use one in my life. I did learn about this in a health and safety class back in 1988, but I needed a refresher. Tonight I put about 20 pounds of brisket burger on my Traeger smoker/grill. It was dirty, but I didn't think it was *too* bad. But when you put 20 pounds of meat that are 75% lean and add all *that* grease to what was already there, it's a bit much. Fifteen minutes into the cook and I notice smoke filling up my entire back yard. LOTS of smoke. Too much smoke. I ran out and the grill has little flames licking out the sides and back. Like a dummy, I open it up and am rewarded with six foot flames shooting up to the roof of my house. Welp, I happened to have a handy, dandy fire extinguisher that's especially for grease fires just about eight feet away. And I had just happened to be bored enough to read and reread the instructions just a few weeks before. I snatched up the extinguisher, pulled the pin, aimed it at the bottom of the fire, and squeezed the trigger. The fire was OUT in about two seconds. This is the BEST $20 I've ever spent in my life! *Now* I know not to put that much grease on top of an already greasy drip tray and yes, I'll be buying another extinguisher. (Now I want to get a couple of red ones for the trucks while I'm at it! lol!) Safety first, whoo-ah!

Hopefully I never need to use this but in case I need to use it the hanging safely in my closet in easy reach. The little easy to install hook is a nice addition to an extinguisher. The dial is easy to read if it is ready to understand if the extinguisher is ready to use. The pin is easy to remove to start using the extinguisher in fire fighting action.

Safety is the name of the game, in your kitchen or in your shop you need to be able to respond to fires fast! I have a newer home and I equipped my wife's kitchen with high end appliances. You would think that in itself would make it a pretty safe kitchen. Twice in the past 5 years, the high end appliances caught fire for no good reason. Thank goodness damage was minimal and the appliance in question was replaced for free. The morale to this story is, no matter how safe you think your surroundings are, it is still a great ideal to be prepared for emergencies. This little extinguisher is just what you need for your kitchen! I would highly recommend getting an extinguisher you can trust, Kidde is the one you want to protect your family!

Purchased with the hope that I never use it
I have always believed in safety and fire extinguishers have always been a part of my plan. Living in a small community that doesn't have a local company to service fire extinguishers males the 10 year service life of this unit very attractive. Additionally, there is no annual service fee making this unit a good deal. Don't be without fire extinguishers in your home!
