Q:Standard construction uses 16" centers for studs. Why do they not make these grab bars in multiples of 16 inches to match the spacing of the studs so they can be mounted securely?

1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  The 18” bar is for a vertical mount in a commercial setting. It is a requirement.

          ADA Grab Bar
The Glacier Bay grab bar is a good safety device. This one is 24 inches long and is 1 1/4 inches in diameter. It seems to be very strong and is made with stainless steel. It is rated to handle up to 600 lbs. I use this bar to pull myself up to get into a ships chair and to hold on during rough seas. It is rugged. Installation is simple and easy with the provided screws. Also, trim rings cover the installation screws.

Does the job and is a good value choice in nice stainless steel
Does the job and is a good value choice in nice stainless steel. It looks good and the stainless won't rust. This bar gets the job done, especially if you can locate it on a stud. The "18" length makes it sound like it won't hit studs on 16, but you can make it work since the flanges are bigger. I didn't use wing-its, I hit a stud in a vertical installation. It comes with 6 nice 2" stainless steel #10 screws. No rust will come from these. Why not 5 stars? Because the little dent on the flange can be a pain. It doesn't look great, and it can be a bit clumsy to engage or disengage.

          Handy grab bar
Always needed in our large shower. Have it installed before you really need it. Not just for ADA. Easy to install after you use a stud finder to see where the studs run. This is the best place to install to be able to hold the weight of someone needing a helping hand. After installing, just slip the cover rings over the attachment points and you are done. Nice brushed stainless steel will look great and not rust or color if you wipe it down after every shower.

          Nice looking, simple grab bar
This is a nice looking 24 inch grab bar. The width is very comfortable. It is smooth, my other one has some texture, which I prefer, but even wet it didn't feel slippery. I placed it on the edge for getting in and out of the tub. Installation requires screwing the flange ends in to a stud. They provide the screws. After locating the stud and marking the flange holes, I used a ceramic drill bit for the tile and then a wood drill bit. It feels really secure. The hardest part was removing and replacing the flange covers. I had to use a rubber mallet for both removal and final install. Was careful during the install to not crack the tiles. Once properly installed the covers stay put.

          Grab on
Glacier Bay grab bar was chosen to add to the shower for a feeling of more stability. Installation required drilling four holes which I lucked out and aligned with grout lines rather than having to drill through tile. At two feet long and at a height of three feet it works just fine for us. As we aged a need for grab bars seemed more important and Glacier Bay has a nice assortment from which to choose.

Strong, solid, well-made, awesome, awesome addition to any home--there when you need it!
These grab bars are OUTSTANDING!  Installed properly, they are SOLID AS A ROCK, provide support, stability to someone that may be unsteady, unstable on their feet, or just needs some added support, especially when going up steps.   I have one step in my garage, which I have already learned CAN BE a problem for someone unsteady on their feet.  This grab bar will quickly, easily, inexpensively SOLVE that problem, add safety, stability where it is needed.  I am not elderly, but I still have several grab bars in my home, primarily for when elderly visit, but not limited to elderly.  Joint surgery is fairly common, other surgeries or injuries may also make us vulnerable to falls.  It is GREAT when you have a SOLID support bar like this one there to grab onto, as needed.   I want to PREVENT falls, keep my home safe for anyone that may be physically impaired, that enters my home.  I have seen these grab bars make a TREMENDOUS DIFFERENCE; they are EXACTLY what is needed to offer support, stability where it is lacking.  Some individuals may suffer from vertigo (dizziness); here too, these grab bars are invaluable.  For a small cost, they deliver LOADS OF BENEFITS, tons of protection from falls, for being EXACTLY what you need, when you need it.   This grab bar is SOLID AS A ROCK, very strong, high quality, well-made, will be an OUTSTANDING ADDITION to my home.  I LOVE IT!  Mostly, I love knowing that it will be there, when needed, to serve not only myself and my family, but also visitors to my home, which includes elderly.  It hangs on the wall, so you forget that it is even there, but when needed, it seems priceless, exactly WHAT YOU NEED, when you need it.  Its design is ideal, has no sharp edges. These are FANTASTIC, I cannot say enough about them.  I also like the price.  Doesn't cost you an arm & a leg to make an improvement to your home that will make your home safer for ANYONE at any age that might be or become physically challenged.  As we live longer, the need for these devices grows...  the good news is that they can make ALL THE DIFFERENCE!   I highly, highly, highly recommend this grab bar.  I LOVE IT, and I think that you will too!

          Attractive, useful accessory
We wanted a grab bar for our bathtub/shower. I chose the Glacier Bay 24 in model. Our surround is thin fiberglass and I knew I needed to mount to studs. In order to hit studs a 24 in bar must be mounted at a 45 degree angle. I like the welded mounting rings on this model. They are sturdy and will hold up to a "grab" if needed. The mount ring covers fit tight and look good. The brushed nickel finish matches our shower head and tub spigot. I used the included stainless mounting screws. My only concern is lack of checkering on the bar itself.

We added a little caulking to play it safe. Also used the winglets that you buy separately… This gives me peace of mind for when my 80yr old mom is holding on. So far so good! It’s a nice looking bar and holding firm.

Just what I needed for my front porch stairs. The install instructions were sufficient for my purposes. I suggest trying #10 screws in your 1/8” holes before installing bar.
