Q:Replacing a rotted 12x8 ft. roof. Going to use OSB, AC Granular Ice and StormSeal, then Liberty SBS Self-Adhesive Roll roofing. Do I need to prime OSB before applying AC StormSeal?

Answer This Question

A:  "Thank you for your question. It is not recommended to install Liberty to an existing roof membrane. For 1-Ply installation we recommend installing the Liberty Cap Sheet on primed approved substrate. If you are looking for the 2-Ply application with the iberty Base/Ply Sheet, please contact your local Pro Desk and see if they would be able to special order this product for you or order online. We would then recommend installing the Liberty Base sheet on the primed appropriate substrate and the Liberty Cap Sheet on top of the Base Sheet. For additional information, please call our technical services team at 877-GAF-ROOF. "

This material is easy to lay down and it sticks perfectly. Time will tell the durability of this material.

Even experienced companies can't get this to stick properly
3 months after install. Material does not stick properly and rolls onto itself. Poor quality manufacturing.

              2 Years No Leaks
This was a good weekend project small part of my roof has always leaking. It has a very low slope. Made it through 2 years with no problems and no signs of quiting. Get plenty of razor blades. Had to by the spray can asphalt material. You can do it!

INSTALLATION OF THE LIBERTY SELF ADHISIVE CAP
Installed on a very low slope roof. I followed the instructions that I got from the web for suggested installation and followed them. Problem that I first encountered is that Home Depot does not stock the Matrix 309 primer in the store. It is rather thick and can be cut a little with mineral spirits. Best to roll out the roofing to ensure straight lines first, once you remove the film, it is stuck for good. Like anything else ensure you have a good base to install it on, and don't rush the job. This appears to be much better than the rolled roofing, which will start to disintegrate in about 3-5 years. Will see how long this holds up. I used this instead of tin roof for horses. The pinging on a metal roof will unsettle them.

                  Easy installation for Home owner
I'm a homeowner installing a roof for the first time. I had no idea what I was doing, but thanks to the videos/instructions/these reviews, I just saved like $5000!! :) Total out of pocket was under $800 I'd say. But whew, hard on the back, all that bending over. I was installing over a garage, with stairs up to the roof/deck above, so I bought a dolly to transport the rolls up to the roof. No problems with the weight of the rolls. I took several shortcuts though: Since HD was out of the recommended asphalt primer, and I didn't want to wait for a delivery, I just used an "asphalt sealer" that looked pretty close, that they had in stock, to coat the plywood. Then I took my chances and just installed the "Cap layer" or whatever on top. Apparently installing THREE layers is recommended by GAF. Heck with that! Added expense, + nobody has time for that! Anyway, then I smeared some Asphalt "cement" around the seams. Stinky! I have a completely flat roof (no slope, like is apparently required for this product). Just installed it last night. It rained lightly for an hour and no leaks in the garage underneath yet! Hooray! Today/sometime soon I'll install the flashing around the perimeter. Wish me luck! Will update after it pours down rain this weekend :) I mean, what's the worst that can possibly happen? Fingers crossed.

The rolls are very heavy (so get help lifting), but the material is flexible and flattens out quickly once placed. Easy to cut with a utility knife. The back side of the white peel-off material sticks very strongly to the sticky side of the roofing, so caution should be used letting it fly about in the wind (not uncommon on a roof); it would definitely be easier if both sides were equally non-sticky.
