Q:Is this good to prime radiator heaters?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi CR10, thank you for your question. As it turns out, our products, including the Interior/Exterior Metal Primer, are not recommended to be applied to radiator heaters, areas exposed to extreme heat (exceeding 140F) or get too hot to touch, as our products will quickly fail if applied to these types of surfaces. For heated surfaces that do not get too hot to touch, it is still generally not recommended to coat them as we have not tested our products on such surfaces and cannot say how they will perform. Have a great day! - Randy

Its the third time and last I gave the chance to Behr product. Bought it to paint some metal thing. It says works for galvanized metal and can be painted oil or water base paint. All what I needed. So did my prep, send, clean, prime, 6 hours to dry. Oil paint spray and paint just shrink. I have never had this kind of experience with other brands during my 15 years career. Time and money wasted bad but to waste part what I painted its just devastating. SW and BM all the way now…

Hi there, thank you for your review, Sorry to hear that the oil-based spray paint that you applied shrank when it was applied over the Metal Primer. This is not typical, and I can understand your disappointment. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Prior to painting metal entry door we sanded the entire door after having removed hardware(hinges, door knob). The entire sanded metal surface was cleaned with acetone. Three coats of metal primer were applied to entire door (front, back & edges). Allowing a full day for primer to dry, the next day we applied Behr Oil Based Enamel paint. We applied four coats of paint on each side, and on edges, of door. There being no hurry we waited about 12 hours between each coat of paint. The end result was excellent. It was worth all the work. Keep in mind we removed door from hinges and had a dedicated area to perform all work. Area was well lighted and well vented. We did need to use an old entry door to take the place of the entry door we were working on. If you do not have access to another door you may consider boarding up entry way with plywood and deck screws to secure plywood. Screws were kept close to door jamb so holes left by screws would be concealed/covered up by doors casing. Holes were filled with wall putty. Once final coat of paint was dry we installed new door lock hardware, Ring Doorbell and replaced hinges. Finished by installing and painting door casing. Great Results! Well worth it!

This review is being written on the Behr 1 Quart White Interior/Exterior Metal Primer. I have some wrought Iron railings that have never been painted or primed as well as a bunch of old metal bookshelves that have never been painted or primed either. I knew the best way to ensure good adhesion and thorough and even coverage was to use a good metal primer. I chose the Behr because although there are more famous brands of primer - Behr has never let me down. It seemed a little watery at first because a lot of the primer had settled to the bottom but after thoroughly mixing it for a while it thickened up. It went on kind of thin so I applied 2 coats with a brush. Then I painted with a sprayer and the paint covered and stuck on and it looked showroom new. It’s always worth the extra effort to use the right products and prep all your work in order to achieve great results. Easy to apply and dried quickly. Thumbs up

I had a outdoor, exposed to the elements, air conditioner case that was showing a signs of age, i wanted it to look like new. I was trying to decide if I should just use metal paint and paint over it or use a primer, the paint expert at HD recommended dur to the discoloration of the surface I use a primer first. As I expected to need multiple coats anyhow I followed his advice, In the photos below you can get some idea of the coverage. I cleaned the surface well, and waited for it to dry. At first I wanted to see how many coats were needed to hide the color below. A singles coat, was not enough, neither was two, only on the third coat did I prevent the colors from below from bleeding through. The primed surface was smoother than the original surface, so I'm sure the 'real' paint will take better and be more even. I was surprised that it took three coats to hide discoloration below, but it dried fast in the Arizona heat. In the end it was probably the right call, but I kind of wish I tried the same procedure with just paint to actually tell the difference (too late now).

When painting metal for outdoor use a good primer will extend the like of the paint. I live and work near the ocean and have learned the hard way to prep my metal work unless I want to repaint it every year. Upon first opening the can to mix it prior to use I was surprised how thick the solids were on the bottom of the can. Unlike come cheaper primers this is not mostly solvent.Coverage was easy ant the primer flashed off fairly quickly giving fast time to paint. One thing you need to remember, this is a primer to improve paint adhesion not a base coat. It will finish semi-transparent, the point is to make your paint stick better and last longer.

Water-based Metal Primer is easy to use with sprayer! Dries in 30 minutes and clean up is a breeze with soap and water! We repurposed 4x20 ft sections of brown metal roofing for siding and used this primer after pressure washing them. As with all painting projects, you need to thoroughly read and follow the manufacturer's recommendations, in order to achieve the best results and for the finish to last. Prep work is the most important step in the process! Behr recommends thinning the primer with no more than 1/2 pint of clean water per gallon when using a sprayer. This ratio worked well for the metal roofing sheets. Behr also recommends tinting the primer for bright or deep topcoat colors, aka the paint color you apply on top of the primer. Luckily, our color was a light gray so the white primer worked out fine. Primer covered the brown metal roofing well and after an hour, I was able to paint. Again, water based product allows for easy clean up!

This 1 GAL. WHITE INTERIOR/EXTERIOR METAL PRIMER, IN WHITES/FLAT worked out just great! We needed it to cover up/repaint some aluminum outdoor tables we had that were looking a bit outdated and worn out... this product did the job!! Easy to apply, covered very well in 1 application, dries quickly and gave our tables the primer base coat that we needed so we could cover them up! Nice smooth coating

I used this primer on a pair of 64 year old tractor fenders. These fenders are heavy gauge iron and had a lot of rust and old paint on them. After several hours of grinding and sanding, I managed to get most of the old paint and rust removed. Behr states that the primer can be used on "sound rusty metal." These fenders had a lot of sound, rusty metal and even a few places that were unsound. After a couple of coats of the Behr metal primer, these spots were no longer discernible. The primer is thin enough to readily flow into cracks and crevices. I chose to use a paint brush and had several runny spots as a result. This was not unexpected and I intend to sand these spots down before applying the final coat. Also, my drying times were not as fast as the label listed. I'm sure this is due to Florida's extremely high summertime humidity.

BEHR 1 qt. White Interior/Exterior Metal Primer, Whites/Flat This was my first time using this primer. The primer is thinner than paint and when applied with a brush streaks badly but as I found it does not matter. If you are spraying the primer I think it would spray right out of the can. The primer went on easy and dried to paint in about 1 hour. Cleanup was easy since it is water based. The paint went on easy and covered well with two coats. The finish really looks good and I am pleased with the outcome.

I was very interested in trying a waterborne metal primer. So I gathered my instruments (See photograph 1.) to assess the prevailing conditions. And I selected two difficult substrates (See photographs 2 and 3. ) to evaluate the product. The specimens were degreased, clean and dry. Air temperature was 74F. Both surface temperatures were 74F. (The specimens are inside.) Relative humidity was 74.5%. That makes the calculated dewpoint about 65.5 degrees F. So, based on typical painting specifications, I was greater than 5 degrees above the dewpoint. However, I did observe that the product instructions do not address this margin: possibly because it is a waterborne product. When stirring the primer, I noticed it has a very appreciable solids content (which easily is kept in suspension) - and it has no objectionable volatiles or odor. The primer was easy to apply, including working around cut edges and penetrations, over rivets and screws, cutting in adjoining insulation and conduits, and coating around / beneath crisscrossing cables. One orientation that did pose greater difficulty was painting a portion of my test panels overhead. Likely this was due to my election to brush (as opposed to roll) because of small spaces between the obstructions. I think the results of my first try were good. All the features of my brass specimen were covered. (See photograph 4.) The galvanized steel uniformly was coated. (See photograph 5.) The primer dried in the timeframe anticipated. It appeared to have good adhesion. I did not perform a pull test - but just tried to abrade it with moderate pressure on a paint stirrer and a 5-in-1 tool. My only concern was the pattern of weak spots (very thin coverage). Those were not holidays or signs of contamination. I think they resulted from my use of a cheap disposable polyester brush instead of the recommended nylon / polyester blend. I'm reasonably sure the latter would promote better loading of the brush / coverage (greater film thickness) and mitigate some of the difficulty I had with overhead work. Nevertheless, the primer's flow and self-leveling characteristics are good. While I'm not particularly concerned about bonding the top coat, I'll trying try cross brushing a second primer coat to further evaluate its coverage and workability. Sure enough! After a bit of tack time, coverage vastly was improved by a few strokes brushing perpendicular to the first application - even with the same amateur brush. (See photograph 6.)
