Needs to be thinned for best results
I used the product to coat previously stripped and stained wood doors for my 100 year old house. I worked outside in 70+ degree weather in the shade but found that I had to dilute it with mineral spirits because it was drying too quickly causing streaking and product buildup. It is less odorous as earlier oil based urethane products I had used on previous doors, so that was a plus for this item. Be sure to have some thinner handy if going with this item.

    Worst polyurethane on the market.
How this is a rustoleum product I'll never know. Anyway my experience... built a pallet bar. Used all minwax products and it came out beautifully. Gave it away as a present for my in laws. Built no.2 for me. Tweaked the design a bit, red mahogany minwax stained, it was gorgeous. My polyu set up in the container so I went to get more. HD changed suppliers as we all found out the hard way. Read this is made by rustoleum and figured why not. Love their and Testors (still rustoleum) paint so this should be awesome. Yeah, no! This polyu is entirely too thin, coverage is not great because I constantly have to work drip patrol, and gummies on my brush. Now I have been painting, staining, and finishing wood projects for many years. With many different products and brands used in the past. I know what I'm doing as well as what to expect. Point blank this is a sub par product that shouldn't be given away! Did develop surface bubbles but that is a result of being frustrated and 2nd coating before the 1st coat properly degassed. Also caused by applying too thick. Been there, done that, easily fixed. Went through 5 brushes for 3 coats and although the bar does look ok, I still want to throw it in the river because it used to look spectacular. Maybe my in laws will trade me?

Something is amiss here! Our Varathane Ultimate Oil-Based Polyurethane should not be particularly thin or thick, the viscosity is typical of a traditional oil-based polyurethane. Settling can occur in the can over time, and if the contents are not stirred well before use, this could cause the polyurethane on the top to be very thin, as the solids would be at the bottom. We recommend applying with a good quality, natural bristle brush, cleaning brushes and application tools with mineral spirits as needed. We recommend allowing a minimum of 4 hours between coats, ensuring the previous coat is hard to the touch before applying the next coat. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

      Great Product
Bought a Birchwood Butcher Block and used this product for the finish after proper sanding. Easy to use, great finish, grain just pops. Really happy with outcome.

        glossy not satin
I am so disappointed in this product. Its exactly like everyone else says: shiney and inconsistant when applying. Now my awesome stain looks terrible with this crap on top of it. Cant wait to sand this off and buy some minwax….

We want to try to help! To ensure the proper sheen with Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Ultimate Polyurethane, it is essential that the can is thoroughly stirred before each use and often during your application. This prevents the flatting agents from settling to the bottom of the can. If the surface is more porous, additional coats may also be needed for an even finish.

          This polyurethane is TRASH!!
Streaks with a new foam brush. Terrible coverage. It actually removed spots of cured stain off the wood door while applying.. ( see photos ) TOTAL GARBAGE! Don't waste your money on this. Bring back Minwax.

          Response from Rust-OleumSupportJun 9, 2021
That is not what we like to hear! Streaking may occur if the polyurethane is brushed back into an area that has started to dry, so avoid over working the poly, or brushing back and forth; instead lay the poly down in the direction of the wood grain. We recommend using a good quality, natural bristle brush for our oil-based polyurethane, foam brushes are not recommended. If the excess stain has not been completely removed by wiping it from the surface of the wood, the solvents in the poly can reactivate the stain, causing it to lift. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Wanted a glossy top finish. Applied satin at first, not quite what i was looking for. Used a graco corded sprayer to apply & worked good! The product beaded at 1st, then I waited, 8 hours later Boom. Good product, will biy gallons from now on. Planning on using an HVLP setup on the next one. Remember to vent your space!!!

This was easy to use; it needed more coats that I thought I would use to make the wood uniform. The one thing I don't like about it is the smell. Two weeks later the house still smells like the varathane. Nothing I do eliminates the smell. So,,,,it looks good, but smells stinky.

I like the stain but the poly is trash. I read the instructions, bought the right brush, kept the right temperature yet it ruined a week long project. I will purchase minwax next.

I bought this product to apply to a wooden cart that had been recently stained but still needed finishing. The polyurethane provided a smooth satin finish. It was easy to apply and dried relatively quickly. The item refurbished was an old plant cart that has now been repurposed into a liquor/miscellaneous cart. The polyurethane definitely met my expectations. I am very happy with the final product.

I wiped on the poly with cloth and it came out great. I cut some rags to size and machined washed and dried them to get rid of the lint from cutting the cloth. Then applied the poly. Wiping seems better to me, I didn't get brush marks. But I think I had to wipe-on 3 coats to get a coating equal to 2 brush-on coats. It was an important project for my wife - a kitchen island, and I'm really happy with the results.

                DO NOT use this finish!
Like many of the other reviews, I had very bad results with this product. I've been using minwax poly for 2 decades without a problem. This product applies very different, the results are hit and miss, and sometimes the outcome is catastrophic. Attention Rustoleum - please don't respond with the instructions about the optimal temp and humidity for this product because I obeyed them. Look at the picture on this review and explain to me why your product dries like that sometimes. It's happened three different times in three different places on this project. When applied, the product leveled OK (albeit thick and difficult to spread) , but as it dried it would dry leaving craters and ripples like you see in the pic. And yes, I stirred it adequately. There's no contamination on the surface of this table - it was sanded down to bare wood. I've had to scrape off your crummy finish once but like a fool bought it again thinking the first can I had was aged. Nope, the new can acted just like the old one. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY THIS PRODUCT. I will buy minwax from somewhere else. Shame on home depot for carrying this garbage.

I have used it on a 6 ft. mantle and two end tables over the black Varathane stain. The gloss clear coat gave them great depth. Applies easily, and can be thinned.

At first I bought the spray on product, it didn't work for my application. I then bought this liquid product. It worked great and a small can went a long way. Just be sure to buy good brushes. The product requires some sort of mineral spirit for cleanup so try to get all of your application done on first try because the brushes are hard to clean. I bought two brushes and discarded them after use. I used the product to cover a TV stand that I built.

Would choose another brand next time.
Polyed three rooms totally about 450 sq ft total. I went with Varanthane because it's at my local stores.. I'm now getting ready to screen sand my third coat because of two laps marks... First coat I went with a roller, varanthane's applicator instructions do not specify what applicator to use... I tried a roller on the first coat, because it seemed like the best choice for a noob. I ended up with some lap marks but thought it was because I went back over some already drying areas.. Next I buff sanded my 1st coat using a pole sander with 220 grit.. This time I switched to a lambswool applicator in an attempt to avoid lap marks. 2nd coat came out better in some regards, but the lambswool left some visible marks in the finish as well. So sanded the 2nd coat again 220 sanding screen, but this time with a buffer. For the third coat I went back to a roller because lambs vs roller I basically got the same result. On the third coat I was extra careful.. Made sure it was under 85 degrees, went the full length of the floorboards in one motion, used good even material on the roller etc.. I still see two lap marks! I'm sanding for the fourth time now and am going to give it one more go. If I knew it would be this hard to get a C result with varathane I would have went with a better name brand, even if it was double the cost! The floors do look good otherwise, but this stuff is not user friendly in my opinion. I've been painting walls for thirty years and never had an ounce of trouble, I know it's a different application but it does have some similarities. I think if you're a decent painter, you should be able to put down a good coat with this stuff. I wasn't so lucky so far. These floor were drum sanded 24-100 grit, edged 24-100 grit, hand sanded the edges with 100 grit and then a 220 pole sand was done before the first coat and in between coats.

Hi Rob, we do not recommend applying our Varathane Ultimate Oil-Based Polyurethane to floors, or using a roller to apply the coating. The product label specifies that a brush or applicator pad be used to apply the product, and that our Varathane Floor Finish Polyurethane be used for floor applications, as it remains more flexible and will move with a hardwood floor. If you have any questions about correcting the application, please give us a call at 800-901-0411, we are happy to help. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-gal-Clear-Satin-Oil-Based-Floor-Finish-Polyurethane-2-Pack-130231/202058854 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

I used Minwax oil-based polyurethane 8 oz and then I used Varathane oil-based polyurethane for my dining table restoration. It was not enough to cover the entire of dining table though. I think I have to get 1qt next time. I think Varathane showed better performance such as remaining less brush stroke and looking more clear than minwax. However, Varathane was drying so fast so you have to be very careful when you apply it. I think If I apply it faster then I can have much better result.
