I didn't realize that 5 pounds would be so heavy. I can't use it - bad back- but perhaps the workmen who help me occasionally will be able to use it. Also, I thought the wider end would be wider.

Borrowed one like this from a neighbor to remove roots from a large maple tree we unfortunately had to take down. While still a lot of hard work to dig and remove the tree's root system, this tool was magnificent. Any type of trenching or digging in hard ground is easier with this tool. So I bought one for myself because my neighbor refused to sell me his.

This is not what I expected for a fiberglass handle. From the look and feel of it, I believe it is a fiberglass gore plastic handle. The pick itself appears to be good steel. The handle was not attached when I received the pick. I had to feed it into the head but end first, and then hit it on a wood block to seat the handle. It is then held in using a friction fit. The fit of the handle into the head could be better. I expect to have to do it again when the weather gets cold and the handle shrinks.
It worked fine for chopping out some rotted tree routs, and for levering out patio tiles. It should work good for lite to medium duty tasks. I am not sure I would trust it for heavy tasks. I will have to see how well the head stays on as I use it more.

The 5 lb. Pick Mattock with 36 in. fiberglass handle is very well made. It will be very helpful in trying to dig up some tree roots. And the handle will not rot ,as with a wood handle.. It will also be very helpful in digging up roots and things in my garden, so I can plant. So many things you can use it for. I really do appreciate you letting me try this , thank you so much.

It came unassembled and took me a bit to figure out which way it connects but it is easy to do. I particularly like the handle because the wood seems harder on my hands even with gloves. The first few swings I was a bit nervous with the two parts connection but it totally works. I bet for storage it would be good to separate them but I use this a bit right now and just left the unit assembled.

The pick is easy to assemble without the use of any tools. The fiberglass pole is designed with a grip design molded in. The pick head is designed to slip over the pole from the grip area to the top of the pole where it is supported by a wider area of the pole. It is well balanced and easy to use. The pick head is designed with a pointed pick on one end and a hoe like head on the opposite side.

The head on this tool weighs in at 5 lbs, so it is capable of heavy duty work. Mine came via UPS in a box containing two pieces: the head and a bright-yellow fiberglass handle. I knew how to attach the head to the handle, but since there are no instructions, someone else might not know how to do it. I slipped the head onto the handle until it rested on the end of the handle. I then raised the piece about 24 inches above a sacrificial brick I placed on the ground, and then pounded the piece vertically downward until the head was properly fixed on its end. It took about 8 or 9 strikes to position the head. For those of you who are concerned with California health warnings, there is a sticker on the handle that reads, “Cancer and Reproductive Harm wwwP65warmings.ca.gov.” I used this tool to dig a lengthy 5 inch trench in dirt and rocky soil. It gave me a workout, but it did what I wanted it to do.

Good product
I order arrived in two parts. I just wish they had included instructions on how to mate the two (handle and mattock). I did my best to put the two together but during my first use, they separated. However, the product seems to be of good quality.

Very good product , enough heft to get the job done for me. I have this for 3 weeks now. Met , actually exceeded , what I expected.
Nasty tree stump with never ending deep roots, but this axe made short work of it. Only drawback is that the axe becomes loose on its handle when trying to lever it out of a deep dig. Wish there was a way to keep it tight against the handle.

Make short work out of tough projects
Had to dig up old trees roots and bushes and researched different mattocks on the market. I knew I wanted a tool that would not only do the current job but a tool that will have longevity to last for years, I decided on this Nupla 5lb mattock and am sure glad I did. After receiving it I thought maybe I should have gotten the cutter mattock instead but I was wrong. This mattock did what I needed it to do making my job easier then thought. It is 5lbs, so you will get a workout in but the results are amazing. Lil to no vibration from handle when even hitting tough roots and the mattock head made easy trenches, cut through roots and was even able to use it as a pry bar to get root system out of ground.
Highly recommended tool and will be looking for more Nupla tools to add to my arsenal!

Does the Job
I bought this to rip out a bunch of bushes and volunteer saplings along my back fence. It's a workout! And it takes some practice to use it efficiently. But it's terrific for whacking through the roots and digging under the root ball. You'll also want a pair of loppers and a long-handle spade.

My neighbor let me borrow his to break up some dirt in a flowerbed, was so happy with it and so versatile that I went out and bought one that same day. Highly recommended

Good pick
Replaced an old pick with a broken wooden handle - it does what a pick is supposed to do - no complaints.

Nupla always delivers
his mattock is a beast on my 11 acre farm. I primarily use it to pull our rocks, and roots from bushes and small tress on my land. Very powerful on the draw and very sharp pick. Its 5 lb. head breaks up hard soil with ease. Very sturdy fiberglass handle. Albeit not as cheap as your conventional mattock/pick, do keep in mind this tool is geared towards the farmer, landscaper, etc., where regular and heavy use is applied--not so much the urban gardener. There are much lighter mattocks for that type of work. But don't get me wrong, if you have hard/heavy/rock/clay, this is your daddy!
