very nice flashlight
I think the flashlight is a good product. Very bright and it totally lights up my shed which is about 150 feet away. The construction is solid and feels like a quality product. The push button for high/low/strobe is very nice and easy to use. The only negative I see is that the flashlight says you can focus the beam for flood vs spot but this feature is totally useless as other reviews have also mentioned. Otherwise it's still a handy little flashlight that I would buy again. If the focus option worked as advertised I would have given it 5 stars.

A high quality affordable flashlight
I bought this flashlight after being introduced to new LED flashlights and after having tried another product by Maglite. The price was at first questionable, but once I started using it, I was shocked that it wasn't much more expensive! It has 3 modes, High, Low, and Strobe. I never use the strobe, but the high and low modes are used quite often. The low mode conserves battery power but still lights up an area very well -- if you were to use this in a dark house, you better believe that the room is going to illuminate and neighbors will notice. On high, this is a powerful flashlight with a very bright light. The high mode is sometimes too bright for me to use. One night I was walking by a dark park and decided to use my XL 50 on high to see what it does and wow! That park lit up like there was a huge spot light on it! Turning the bezel also allows you to switch from spot to flood. And, what I love on any good flashlight is the ability for it to stand up on its tail end so that it can act as a candle, and this one does it with style. I dropped it once on a hard marble floor and there was just the slightest mark on the bezel -- one that's very hard to notice without very close inspection. This shows me that the build quality can withstand some abuse, though I wouldn't quite call it indestructible. I'd highly recommend this light to anyone looking for a flashlight that is easy on batteries but could still light up a whole area like it's no one else's business.

My favorite Maglite yet
I've owned several Maglites in the past, including minis and the fullsizers. I've tried other flashlights, mostly LEDs, but they were all basically worthless. Most of them always started to glitch after very little use (although in all fairness my job is very rough on lights). I've always ended up returning to the less bright, but definitely more rugged Maglites. I considered the LED mini, but I found this in the process. I've been completely satisfied so far. Outstanding brightness, long battery life, extremely small and light, and the beam is nice and solid. If i had to choose a con, I'd say it's the use of AAA batteries vs AAs. But that would not prevent me from buying another in the future. I highly recommend this flashlight to anyone. It is well worth $30.

    Good move by Maglite
Great light at this price point. Excellent construction, beam pattern, brightness, and run time. This light moves Mag into the 21st century, and hope to see more innovations going foward. Note that this light, like all Maglites, is made in the USA, also a major positive. In summary, you can buy somewhat better small LED lights, but if you want one that's made in the USA, you'll pay 2 to 3 times as much as what you'll pay for the Maglite XL 50. Highly recommended.
