My 25 year old Kohler tub faucet was leaking badly, with the hot lever dripping, and acting weird: all the way closed ran like all the way open, with a drippy low flow somewhere in between. So it was past time to repair/replace. The old parts were all stuck: the screw holding the handle completely rusted out, the lower cone shaped piece frozen solid, and the stem itself? The 5/8” nut part rounded out, and a wrench, visegrips, penetrating fluid, heat, nothing would budge it. I ended up having to cut away the flange below the nut. A nightmare. My advise is use a thin layer of grease or anti-seize on the threads to make it easier decades down the road, and don’t overtighten. I found o-rings for the lever and the top cap. I used a 1-1/2 in long 8-32 stainless screw and lockwasher to secure the lever. I replaced the cold stem because it’s only a matter of time before it would fail, too. Should have called a plumber!
