I am using it as a metal lath scratch coat and bonding thinset for manufactured stone on the vertical exterior of my house. It meets the ASTM standards for exterior use. It has worked out very well, and once set, the stone has been impossible to pull off. In my mind, the price point is great compared to other modified thin sets, it gets the job done, has handled freeze-thaw in the few weeks it has been in place.

VersaBond is the only thin-set mortar I use when I have a choice in the matter. I vote VersaBond as Home Depot's single best product. I have been telling my clients, co-workers and friends this for many years. Try it, you'll like it.

Versabond thinset is a modified product. It works well, has a good working time, and good adhesion characteristics. I usually pick up different thinkers at the tile warehouse I deal with, but sometimes I don't feel like driving across town. I have used this material on numerous occasions and always with good results.

      All I ever use
I use this stuff for every tile job. I've tried other products that was cheaper but you pay for what you get. Always a strong hold, sets fairly quick, and never have to worry about the quality. Redoing our Master bath and I'm using it for the floor as well as the walls. Great stuff.

      Rust-o-leum Concrete Sealer & waterproofing
We build a waterfall /pond and we thought of applying the Rust-o-leum waterproofer. The product is easy to apply, worked well in sealing fine lines and reduced water evaporation. It has been almost a year and still worked great. I highly recommend the product.

      Good thin-set mortar.
This thin-set mortar is a quality mortar and fairly easy to use. However, it does have a fairly short set time so you need to install your tile quickly. Also, I highly recommend that you remove all excess mortar from between your tile prior to it completely drying as it is much harder to remove once it has fully set. I use a painters knife to remove the excess mortar and quickly wipe the tile edges with a paper towel. This leaves a clean groove for installing your grout once the mortar has completely cured.

      Versabond mortar did the job!
I've used Versabond many times in my remodel projects. It's holds well for bathroom tile jobs. Make sure to let it set up well before grouting according to the instructions.

      Love my new tiled porch!
The thin-set worked beautifully for our front porch tile installation. We started with a very drab looking concrete porch and it's now beautifully tiled and very appealing. Added value to our home with ease!

      great product
I live in Texas, all my tiles guys prefer Versabond. While in Charleston redoing home, the tile guys were using another product from Lowes...I picked up Versabond and told them , that is what everyone in DFW area, that has done work for me uses....well..they were amazed what a superior product it is...and everyone of them said they would never go back to the other product they were using....so guess you could say we were "pleased".

      Good stuff, good price
I used this to install a precast fireplace surround and hearth. It was easy to work with and adhered well to both Hardie backer and sheet rock.

      Worked great!
This product worked well for our bathroom tile project. Be sure to mix it thick enough to have stiff peaks if you are doing walls.

cost effective alternative for a large job
I had a 1000 sq ft tile job to do and was dreading the cost of thin set at over $30 a bag. I read some reviews and decided to give the versa bond a try. It was easy to use and the results were great.

      Use this all the time.
I use this thinset on almost every tile job I do. I used it in all the photos I've attached. It's my go-to for laying ceramic or porcelain tile.

Tile and thinset tips and tricks
I’ve used this thinset for years on different projects and have had very good success with it. It is easy to mix and spreads well when applying it. I use this thinset for both tile work as well as a jointer for hardie backer. Long term, this thinset holds up quite well and provides an excellent bond. Your tiles will feel stable and secure and won’t break loose over time. I’ve learned a few tricks on the best way to work with this stuff and I hope this helps you on your next tile project. Get the mix right. What you want is a consistency similar to peanut butter. I use a 5 gallon bucket to mix this in. I’ll pour however much mix into the bucket as I think I’ll need for the work I’m doing over the next hour or so. This is usually about ½ a bucket of thinset mix or less. Use your garden hose to add some water to the mix. Be careful not to add too much. Typically, you want just under 1/3 as much water. Use a paddle mixer and drill to get things going. Don’t spin the drill too fast either, just keep it slow and steady until the water is all mixed in and the thinset mix is nice and smooth. The consistency needs to be such that you can spread it easily on a surface and the troweled ridges will continue to stand up on their own. It still needs to be pliable enough though to maneuver the tile in place. While setting tile, if the thinset mix starts to dry out, you can always add just a bit more water and re-mix it to get it back to the right consistency. Don’t apply too much thinset at once. Remember that this stuff will start to dry out once you spread it, so don’t apply more that you can work in about 20 minutes. Twist the tile just ever so slightly when setting it. This will help to get the bond right. I also use a rubber mallet to tap the edges of the tile to ensure I get a good bond. You may also need the mallet to work on getting the corner heights to match up. Remember that setting tile isn’t just the square and making sure the grout lines are straight. You also have to make sure the tile lays flat and the set height is even with the surrounding tiles. I tend to use tile spacers to line up my spacing. Have a large putty knife handy as well as the trowel. I use a 4” putty knife probably more than the notched trowel itself. This is handy for cleaning up tile edges, “buttering” the backs of tiles (when you get into those corners) and scraping up unused thinset off the floor. A hammer and cold chisel works well for getting up dried thinset off the floor. Sometimes at the end of a long day, you may forget to clean an area of thinset off the floor at the edge of a tile you just laid. This will dry and in the morning you’ll have to get it up before you can lay more tile there. Not to worry, just take a hammer and cold chisel to it and it will come right up.

Easy install of a beautiful new bathroom
Easy to mix and held tile in place very well on floor and on walls. We are not professional tile setters - just a working couple taking on a bathroom renovation by ourselves. The end result is beautiful and, most importantly, we're still talking to each other!

      Easy to Use
So, a couple of do-it-yourself tile books I have talk about thinset in almost mystical terms as how hard it is to mix, get the consistency right, and have good adhesion. I poked around the net, and found someone who measured out a 50# bag of versabond, cup by cup. The magic ratio is 11 cups thinset to 4 cups water. I used this ratio, and my very first batch was absolutely perfect. I was laying 16" tiles, so I could put down about 6 tiles (I was using a 1/4 x 3/8 notched trowel) before I had to mix more. The key was that the troweled peaks did not sag, nor were they gritty (too much water, too little, respectively). I checked adhesion and it was fantastic. If you follow the mix ratio above, you get slightly less than 1 gallon of thinset. I was able to easily mix this in a plastic pail with an 18V Dewalt. I have also used the pre-mix thinset, but wanted to try the Versabond because it is so much less expensive. I'm glad I did. The picture below is Montagna Cortina, carried by Home Depot, along with Hardiebacker. Over the past few years, I've completed two baths, a backsplash, and some decorative tiling with this combination.
