The bookcase turned up falling to pieces - sections of wood were missing, interior pins/screws were sticking out dangerously, there were scratches all over it. Really disappointed.

No tools required for assembly and is lightweight but sturdy. The finish is attractive and the bookshelves stack nicely on top of each other.

Thinner than expected, not for lots of heavy books, better for media or paperback storage. Be careful not to buy a top shelf that is for a wider bookcase I can't find.

Perfect fit

This item does not meet the minimum requirements of a bookcase to be used as a bookcase. The shelving material is too thin to hold the 20-30 lbs of books per shelf of a bookcase. And, they are overpriced for the lack of quality you get or expect from the Home Depot. If you want a display case, this is perfect. However, if you want to stack them to make a taller unit, the 35" walnut mantle top is not available to finish off the look. I had to return all 10 of the units that I purchased because of the discontinued 35" walnut mantle top.

Arrived in tact with no assembly required. Looks great and is fairly sturdy. I stacked mine to create a tall case but it’s important to brace top shelf to a wall since it’s a little wobbly.

These folding/stacking bookcases are great! They are sturdy and look good for the price, and they really unfold and are ready to use immediately. Probably not elegant enough for a sophisticated living room, but perfect for baths, bedrooms, playrooms, family rooms....

The open bookcase worked out well. The difficulty was obtaining the proper top for the case. However, it finally worked out after several delays.

This is my second purchase on this item. I can tell from the weight of it that less quality has gone into this product than when I purchased it last. It is lighter, which in some ways is a good thing -- easier to carry and lift at craft shows. I would recommend this product

the bookcases looked good but while I wad in a ladder to put some books the top bookcase gave in and all the books fell on me, almost killing me. I had books all over the place. I am taking them back for a refund. They were deffective as the bottom bookcase gave in.

I have purchased these bookcases before Home Decorators merges witb Home Depot. I returned these bookcases because the wood was not as thick as the old ones making the bookcases less sturdy. I would be afraid of stacking them.

Perfect on a dorm room desk for extra storage!

Shelves were constructed of more than one piece of wood. Shelves a little shaky. I think the design could be improved easily. This kind of shelf used to be easier to find and better made.

I had purchased three of these a few years back. Same finish. The new ones, just ordered, are no where as nice as my older versions. Also, one of the cases that I purchased this time, broke into pieces when I loaded it with books. They don't make them like they used to.

I've used this type of bookshelf for at least 15 years, and I really like the basic design. When I first started buying these, they were made from parawood, a hardwood made from rubber trees. This was a very attractive and very strong hardwood. But now these shelves are made, not from hardwood, but from just 'wood', which in this case is a fairly soft pine or something similar, and the pieces are not single pieces of wood, but many small pieces joined together. The thickness of the shelves has been reduced from 3/4 of an inch to 5/8 of an inch, as well. The shelves are only supported at the four corners when they're folded down, so this thinner wood becomes vulnerable to warping when supporting heavy weight, especially in this 35 inch length. The overall design is very attractive. I've got dozens of units like this in my library, and I like them. The way they fold up is very clever, and allows them to be moved easily and quickly. But this shift to making them out of small pieces of thinner, softer wood means that they are no longer as sturdy as the older units. They would work well for fairly light loads, but if you've got a lot of heavy books, they would likely warp, as mine did. I ordered several of the smaller 27 inch shelf units at the same time I bought these 35 inch ones, and the 27 inch units do a very nice job holding full shelves of small paperback novels, despite being made of the thinner soft wood. So you just need to balance the size of the unit with the weight of what you want to put on it. In my experience the 35 inch shelves should hold about 40 to 50 pounds per shelf without any real problems, but if you go much over that, you're likely to have the shelves warp from the weight.

Folding bookshelves are quickly becoming my favorite type of furniture because they are so easy to move and store! These are sturdy, quality book shelves. I also recommend getting the mantle piece to go on top to increase shelf space. Just make sure to get the right size mantle to correspond with your bookshelf. (The 27.5" bookshelf matches to a 29 or 29.5" mantle (I can't remember the exact measurement, but the mantle product description will tell you the sizes).
