We replaced all of the old wood 2X6" decking on our 12' X 20" wide deck with clean brand new 2X6"...
We replaced all of the old wood 2X6" decking on our 12' X 20" wide deck with clean brand new 2X6" wood. Upon completing replacement of all the 2X6 boards we followed the preparation instructions provided and applied first coat and were impressed with how nice it looked. However after six months it began to peel up so we waited until late spring and scraped off all of the loose pieces and applied a second coat. That coat only lasted about 6 months as well. At that point we decided to pressure wash the deck to see if we could at least get all of the loose coating off down to the bare boards so we could let them dry and reapply. We did that and then reapplied another coat for a third time and now after 8 months it is peeling off again. We have used Behr paint in our all of our homes for over 25 years and never had any problems with the paint but this product quite frankly is pretty much worthless especially now because we are not sure if the deck can even be repaired without grinding off all of the remaining Deckover that is actually sticking between the peeling sections. So we may have to have someone pull all of the boards completely off and replaced with new boards or spend the extra cost to put on composite decking. While there are several 5 star reviews I see there are plenty of 1 star reviews and at this point I am not even sure I would give this product a 1 star review as our cost to this point is ridiculous.

This product started to peel after the first 6 months. After 1 year it is almost completely off. Now I need to find the best way to remove the rest. When I called the company they were sorry and sent a check . Someone at the store said to power wash the rest off. Any other suggestions?

    Hi DKC,

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the peeling, especially after only 6 months! To remove the DeckOver completely, we recommend using a power sander with coarse grit (40-60) sandpaper. For further assistance, please feel free to reach out to us directly. a couple of years ago I coated 2 porches on my house that were unfinished treated wood showing some signs of wear with deckover. I didn't use their cleaner prior to the coating but did a meticulous job of pressure washing the porches. I let it dry for 3 days and did 2 coats of deckover. There weren't a lot of cracks to fill in but the ones that were there responded well with heavy coats. Within less than a year certain spots that saw the most sun during the summer started to come up. Overall I liked the finish as it gave a bit of slip resistance but was troubled by the failure of the product even though the areas of failure were fairly small. This stuff in not at all inexpensive so I expected better. I made a comment or two to a Home Depot employee in the paint dept. and he was not very polite in his response. He insinuated that I didn't know what I was doing and that I obviously didn't properly prepare the surface. I'm well over 60 and have done a lot of painting inside and outside of various homes and cabins I have owned. I have tried various brands and quality levels of paints and was mostly successful and satisfied with most. When I did have a problem and brought the problem up to the vendor where I bought the paint in question my problem was pretty much always dismissed as improper surface prep. In my younger days I might have taken shortcuts but learned my lessons early on so I usually spend a fair amount of time and effort to make sure my work was worthwhile. This spring we added a handicap ramp for my wife's sister who was coming to visit and could not do stairs for various reasons. The ramp was built with treated lumber and left to cure for several months. I decided to hire the painting job out to a professional painter who had done some work for me a few years ago. I specified what product I wanted to use(Deckover) and told him I wanted him to use their prewash product. I can be verified that I bought the cleaner and the Deckover from Home Depot in Brandon, MS. I watched to be sure he did a good job of prepping the wood before coating. He used the cleaner and a brush and scrubbed the wood thoroughly. He let the wood sit for several days before coming back and applying the Deckover. He finished sometime around June and it looked great. A few weeks ago my wife complained to me that the stuff was starting to peel off in a couple of spots. I started paying closer attention to it and now I'm seeing more and more spots where the finish is just chipping/peeling off(coming off in 4" pieces). I gave this product a second chance because it was suggested that my preparation for the first time wasn't done properly. I have refinished decks before and pressure washing was all that was needed for a satisfactory and durable coating with a much less expensive product but I wanted to be sure that this time I did specifically as required and the deckover didn't even last more than a few months without peeling away. This is a very overpriced and unsatisfactory product and an expensive lesson.

We regret to hear of the negative experience you have had with our product and we would like to help. In reading your review, it sounds like the DeckOver peeled twice, and only after a couple months. As the manufacturer, this is not something we want our customers to experience with our product, especially so soon. If the chipping and peeling is happening in smaller, more isolated areas, we recommend sanding these spots down, cleaning them, and touching up with more DeckOver. If this is happening to the majority of the surface though, the best solution would be to remove the loose coating, clean the whole surface, and apply 2 new coats. We know how much time and effort goes into a project like this. A customer care representative has reached out to you directly to help and also provide some tips. Behr

      Very Unhappy after one year
We cleaned our large deck as per instructions, applied the coating as per instructions, and one year later the coating is peeling up from the deck, not in one or two spots but all over our deck. All the money spent on this coating was a waste and so was the high price of labor to install it on our previously beautiful deck. I believe Behr should have to return all our expenses to us including the cost of this coating and the cost of removing it and replacing it on our decks.

Too early to tell, but so far, so good
I've had this applied on my very old, very weathered deck for about 2.5 weeks now in mid-June 2016, and so far, so good. It was applied in less than ideal conditions, in partial direct sun, about 80 degrees and low humidity. It had not rained for about 3 days and my moisture meter had the decking at under 8%. I brushed it on to apply it, on over 200 sq. ft. of decking, and also on some vertical surfaces. It was much easier to apply with a wide brush than with a roller. I also feel like you will be able to spread it more efficiently with a brush, and that more product will be wasted with a roller. It says not to apply if rain is expected within 24 hours. Unfortunately, it did rain about 26 or 28 hours after the second coat was applied. That wasn't in the weather forecast. Let's hope that's enough. The one main criticism I have so far is that the actual color is VERY different from the in-store brochure as well as the online color guide. VERY different. I originally wanted to do my entire deck in Cedar Naturaltone, which clearly is a light brown in the color brochure. You put it on and it's a bright glowing orange color. After I applied one coat of that on everything, I went to Home Depot and then got additional cans in plain Cedar to do the second coat on horizontal surfaces only. Railings and vertical surfaces I left in Cedar Naturaltone for the contrast. Even the Cedar color is quite far off from the color in the brochure, it's also a bit too orange. Now let's see if it stands the test of time. I have relatively cold winters here in the northeast and hot, humid summers. I like the texture very much, the matte finish is grippy. And it makes my several decades old deck look like new, almost like composite decking.

        Don't waste your time.
Do not waste your time or money. Cleaned and prepared deck exactly as directed. Less then one month later, deck floor began to peel. So disgusted we decided not to do anything until we returned back up North this summer. We returned to a deck that over 1/2 the paint peeled off. I called Behr and the sent me another 5 gallons of paint, 2 gallons of deck cleaner and told me to purchase 7 gallons of paint remover and they would reimburse me. Really don't want to go thru months of work again. Think I will stain it.

        Difficult
First of all the color is "Orange" not "Natural". It is so thick it is difficult to apply. We have been hampered by rain, but will finish our deck project this week. Then we will paint over this awful color with something more realistic but it won't be Behr.

        DIDN'T LAST 3 MONTHS!!!
I applied 2 coats to my deck in June. By September there were places that the product had worn away to the bare wood! This product is not worth the time and money to put down! There were even spots where it peeled away! Three days of work and money wasted!

        Very thick/Covers well
We used this Behr paint for our white picket fence instead of the deck because we needed the fence to match our house, which is cedar. It's VERY thick paint, which makes it easy to go on to smoother surfaces but a bit harder on rough surfaces. It did do a very nice job of covering the fence in one coat with no shadowing or bleed-through. Can needs to be partially covered while painting or a skin quickly forms.

BEHR Permium DeckOver worked as advertised on my Deck
I used BEHR CEDAR NATURALTONE WOOD and CONCRETE PAINT on my weather exposed deck. I had to replace about half of the 14 year old boards so I needed a product that would help improve the remaining life of the existing boards and match up with the newly installed ones. BEHR PREMIUM DECKOVER did this nicely. Proper preparation of the wood before application was as just as important with BEHR as any other product on the market to obtain the overall desired success upon completion. My only complaint with the BEHR PREMIUM DECKOVER was the color I chose(did not check color samples beforehand). More of a butterscotch pudding color than a natural cedar tone(house color). Clean up was easy with water. I would definitely use BEHR PERMIUM DECKOVER again.

Not easy, but worth the work!
My deck is painted and it looks great. It was not as easy as the commercials imply. Read the directions carefully. It is a lot of work just to get the deck clean enough for painting. Big cracks have to be filled; we used a Wood Epoxy Putty. Small cracks must be filled in with DeckOver and allowed to dry or the roller will just pull the paint out of the crack . Then you have to have 72 hours cure time without any rain. When the weather report would not cooperate we spent half a day putting up a tarp tent over the deck... then of course the predicted rain still has not come.. The finished deck has the texture of very fine sandpaper, I expected something smoother, but the rough surface is better because it is more slip proof. I do not recommend using Deckover on the railings...too rough for railings. The Behr website is also very helpful. They have both email and phone support. All the directions on the can, and more, are at their web site. I would recommend Deckover, with warnings about how hard it is to prep.. But we think it was worth the work!!

        Very disappointed
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have spent a tone of time and many thousands of dollars preping and any applying 2 coats of this paint and after 2.5 years it looks like it’s 20 years old. Everything’s peeling there is rot it’s faded. I can not believe they can sell and advertise a product like this. I actually believed it. I have to redo the whole deck now and and beyond upset. I want my money back!

Hello, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry to hear about the peeling and fading on your deck. This is not the experience we want for our customers, and I can understand your disappointment. I want to learn more about your project and help you with the best solution. I'll be reaching out to you in a private email to assist you further. In the meantime, the best solution to resolve the peeling is sanding off any of the loose coating, cleaning the wood with the All-In-One Wood Cleaner, and allowing the surface to dry completely before reapplying two coats at the recommended spread rate. Have a great day! -Giovanna
Waste of Time, Effort and Money!
I bought this product hoping it would live up to its claims it was like painting with toothpaste but the result looked good. However after following all of the steps prescribed, (stripping, washing and drying) the product started to peel after just one season. I dont mean crack I mean peel off in sheets. for the most part the entire deck surface was bare after my toddler swept it. Does not last. not worth the money unless you want to peel and reapply each year and always have chunks of the material in your yard for the rest of your life. ABSOLUTE GARBAGE

Hi there, Thanks for taking the time to review our Advanced DeckOver. I'm sorry to hear about the peeling on your deck, but I'm happy to help get your project back on track. Unfortunately, our DeckOver cannot be removed by a chemical stripper, so to fix it, I recommend removing any peeling spots by scraping or sanding.  Then sand smooth the edges of the remaining DeckOver on the surface and clean with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner. Once dry, you can touch up the bare spots, and apply another full coat for color uniformity. I've also reached out to you via email to gather more info about your project and further assist. Complete disappointment and waste of money
After replacing some wood and following all the instructions on cleaning and preparing the surface with the recommended products by the company, I find myself frustrated by the unappealing look of peeling paint and the thought of having to redo the entire deck. The product is really expensive and I thought the cost would justify having the deck look nice and that would last a few years. Not even a full 24 months later and my deck is a mess!

We followed the instructions to the “T”. It did what it said. Filled crackes and made the deck look smoother. Looked great. Even got my brother to do his deck too with this product. After a few months it started to bubble and peel. Now I need the try and power wash all this stuff off my deck. I hate wasting money but I hate wasted time even more. You buy a superior product thinking that is what you are getting. My brother’s deck is doing the same thing.

                      Hi Sep13,

Thank you for reviewing Behr DeckOver. I'm terribly sorry to hear about the bubbling and peeling issues you and your brother are having, as it certainly isn't what we want our customers to go through. I'd love to help as best as possible.

The loose DeckOver can be removed with a floor sander/grinder or a power washer. Home Depot usually has great options available. After removing the loose areas and cleaning with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner, the surface should dry for at least 24 hours in dry weather before recoating. If there are DeckOver remnants left, they can be topcoated.

I emailed you directly to follow up and I look forward to assisting you.

                      Kindest regards,

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have an older deck and have maintained it over the years using many products. When I first tried Deckover, many years ago, it was great! I have continued to use it and my deck looks like it is brand new every time I put down the Deckover. (Usually very 3-4 years). It is easy to use and covers and protects with a good solid coat. This is an excellent product and I highly recommend it.

Looks great at first but peels after 2 years
We obsessively prepared the surface according to directions. We applied Deckover on large deck as directed, allowing drying between the two coats. After 2 years, it looks awful. It is peeling wherever there is any traffic. The areas on top of a bench where no one has walked looks good. It also leaves dirt marks that will not come off. We did a chocolate brown color and it looks dirty all the time because I cannot get dirt marks from footprints off. I would not recommend this product.

                                    Hi Joey,

Thank you for sharing your experience with DeckOver. I'm incredibly sorry to hear about the condition of your deck, as it certainly isn't what we want our customers to go through. I understand how disappointing this must be, and I want to find a way to help.

I know you're in the process of replacing your wood boards. For best results when sealing the new wood, I recommend coating all six sides of the boards to help prevent moisture from seeping in.

I have emailed you directly and look forward to assisting you.

                                    Kindest regards,

                                    Doris

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] 6/2018 applied, doing everything recommended. Followed instructions exactly. Deck boards were solid. Looked great for about 8 months. 2019 comes along and huge chunks are flaking off and weak spots developing in deck boards. Sadly I was unaware of the only 1 year only guarantee till it was too late. Our deck is unusable & an embarrassment. Many deck board that were 100% solid are so weak you can put your foot though. My opinion is, if you don't paint BOTH SIDES of your deck boards, moisture gets trapped. This is evident from removing boards, THAT WERE 100% SOLID, and seeing the boards still wet underneath DAYS after it rained. There is absolutely no solution or advice you can give to repair the damage. About $600 and countless hours totally wasted. Husband was in construction (start to finish) and would never recommend this product.

Hi Becs - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the finish on your deck flaked off in big chunks after only 8 months and how the wood underneath is weak! I've reached out to you via email to learn more about your project and make this right. Thank you again for taking the time to submit a review, and I hope to hear back from you soon! - Sara
                                        Absolute Sham!
Followed prep instructions TO THE LETTER. Applied Deck Over carefully and to spec. Surface was dry and rain free for just over 5 days during June in New England. Surface lasted just about one year before cracking and bubbling. One year later the surface had failed completely and nearly every square foot of our deck had missing patches of deck over. Have spent the last 2 summers trying to scrape and sand to remove this stuff. It is an absolute nightmare! I found out just recently that there had been a class action suit and settlement regarding this junk - of course we missed that deadline and it’s now too late to recover. I can’t believe that a Behr has the audacity to still sell this stuff. Home Depot offered to give me more of this junk as a solution. Say what?? I expect the remaining deck over on our deck will outlive me and the only alternative to dying disappointed with a ruined deck will be to spend $5000 and replace the decking. I’ve already spoken to our state attorney general’s office about initiating a deceptive practices complaint. Hopefully that will offer some hope for compensation and resolution for others in my state. Please DO NOT use this junk. DON’T be fooled by the advanced version either. Same junk different package. Save yourself the heartache and stick with penetrating oil based stains. Learn from my pain!

Hi Furiously Disappointed - Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I'm sorry to hear about the bubbling and cracking on your deck after only a year, and how difficult it's been to remove the rest of the coating! To fix the finish, we recommend removing anything that's loose, cleaning the surface with our wood cleaner, then applying 2 new coats of Advanced DeckOver. Alternatively, our solid color wood stains can be applied on top if the wood boards are in good condition. If you prefer to remove the DeckOver completely so you can re-stain with an oil-based finish, this product can be removed with a power sander and coarse grit sandpaper. I've also reached out to you via email to help you get your deck back on track. Thank you again for your review, and I hope to hear back from you! - Sara
