Q:Does this product come in a quart size? I've used other Zinsser primers and love your product. What does it mean that it comes in a 2-pack? (two part?)

Answer This Question

A:  Happy to clear things up, Mary! At this time, Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Low VOC Classic Oil-Based Primer and Sealer is only available in 1 or 5 gallon buckets. Due to shipping purposes, this primer is only available as a case when ordering online. A cause contains 2-1 gallon buckets. This is a one-part primer. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:how quickly must this product be top coated?
    by|Mar 6, 2019

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser Cover Stain Classic Oil-Based Primer may be top coated after it has dried for 2 hours over new or porous surfaces. If the primer is applied over a previously painted or sealed surface, we recommend waiting 3-4 hours before applying a top coat. There is no time limit for applying a top coat, however, dust and other contaminants may settle on the primed surface over time, causing adhesion problems when a top coat is applied. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

      Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer can accept a water-based stain, but you'll need to make sure the stain is solid and not semi transparent. You'll also want to verify that the product can be applied to a painted surface and does not require it to be applied into a porous substrate such as wood. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

                    Answer This Question

A:  This product works well on MDF. I've made numerous built-in bookcases with this stuff and have finished by sanding and then covering with multiple coats of white semi-gloss. Finished product always comes out nice. Zinsser also makes an alkyd base version of this, but on comparing the ingredients, the alkyd version does contain a large amount of water, which scares me with MDF, so this is my go-to!

A:  I am not sure. I used this because when removing 40yr old wall paper it removed all the drywall paper. There was no protection to prevent the drywall from being damaged. I CAN TELL U THIS MAKE SURE U USE A RESPIRATOR W THIS STUFF IT IS VERY VERY STRONG. AND IS VERY THICK!

A:  I think an oil based primer would seal the mdf better than a water based primer and you can cover this primer with a latex based paint. For the best results you need multiple coats of primer and sand in between coats. I suggest you do some more research on how to prep/paint mdf.

A:  The best thing to do is strip the wallpaper; clean the walls; and then prime the drywall. I would think if any product would work on wallpaper it would be this primer but I would check with the associate at the Home Depot paint counter to make sure.

A:  Usually 4 to 6 hours before you can top coat. Keep in mind it is better to apply two thin coats rather than one heavy coat. It takes a bit longer for your project, but the results will last longer.

A:  Dry time can vary considerably due to a lot of factors like the humidity but I normally give it 24 hours to dry completely before applying a top coat. I would double check and feel the primed surface before painting and if it feels tacky then it needs more dry time.

A:  Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain 100 Oil-Based Classic Primer does vary slightly from Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer and Sealer. They offer different dry and recoat times and we do not recommend boxing or intermixing the 2 products together. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Zinsser-1-qt-White-Cover-Stain-Oil-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-and-Sealer-3504/100398403
