A:  No it is not. Zinsser's Amber still contains the wax. If you want dewaxed use their SealCoat. It comes dewaxed and is already a 2# cut so you can use it right out of the can. Personally, I wouldn't use shellac underneath a water based product. It will work but a thinned coat of poly will accomplish the same and have better adhesion with the final topcoat of full strength poly. If you want the amber cast that comes with using amber shellac, you'd do better staining with a water based stain before your water based topcoats. Just make sure your stain is completely dry before sealing and your subsequent topcoats.

A:  I have dogs and after it sets its hard pressed to scratch. I also do not think you will get a good adhesion going over it with another product unless you scuff the surface which will defeat the great results. Hope this helps

A:  Generally no. Most finishes won't stick to waxed shellac. I would not recommend for floors anyway as shellac is relatively soft and builds on the surface. You can test finishes by applying on a sample, cutting a cross hatch with a razor, pressing packing tape and pulling up. Most finishes will pull up with the tape. I did find a wipe on poly that passed the test.

A:  Shellac is a shiny, clear or amber tinted finish applied after stain or In our case, directly on the cedar. In my opinion, you would not want to apply anything over the top of shellac. Normally, you would stain your prepared floor and then apply polyurethane on top.

A:  Hello Ade, No, you don't need to coat it with polyurethane to obtain a glossy finish. It seemed quite glossy all by itself once dried. Actually, you probably should not apply polyurethane directly on top of the shellac as I have read that over time the combination of the two will likely produce an "alligator" look. If you still are inclined to apply polyurethane on top, it was suggested from the research I did that you would need to seal the shellac with a sealer first before applying the polyurethane.

A:  Absolutely! For a floor which receives a lot of wear and tear, you will definitely want to topcoat with a good solvent based poly intended for floors like Varathane. You'll need to apply at least three good coats with sufficient drying time between with scuff sanding to remove nibs and allow for better adhesion between the coats.
